WinUAE & IBrowse question
« on: May 14, 2004, 04:58:10 PM »
I'm trying to get IBrowse running in WinUAE.

First... I'd like to use Termite TCP .........
How do I get TCP to open a connection with the com port?
Whats the correct name for the com ports?
Serial.device doesn't work.

Has anyone connected to the net through IBrowse or
AWeb etc. ??
How ??  I'm new at UAE.

You shouldn't need a tcp stack.. WinUAE has bsd socket emulation, which will take care of that for you (so long as you have it selected in the prefs.)

@MadGun

Hello MadGun ... hows it going??

I had the BSDSocket selected but it didn't open
a connection to the com port.
Also what about a dialer ??

Get the Windows side online first. Fire up UAE (with bsdsocket enabled), and IBrowse should work as if you had the Amiga online.

@Matt_H

Thanks .. I'll try that.

Still, is there no way to get around using
the Windows dialer??

exactly. I connect as usual on the windows side, then start up winuae and start either Ibrowse, aweb or voyager, whichever I want to test.

it should all work smoothly.

i'm no programmer, but it's probably redundant.

the biggest issue for me is that an emulation on top of windows will slow things down a bit.
that's one of the main reasons i use Opera to do most of my browsing. it's just easier.

but i do like to check sites (that i write) on amiga browsers to see how they look.

Might I suggest DSL or cable?   :lol:

Seriously, though, I think you CAN install and run a TCP stack on the emulated Amiga.  You'll probably take a fairly significant performance hit, though.  (The serial.device emulation isn't exactly fast...)  In your WinUAE properties (under Game and IO ports), you have to have "Serial" set to the COM port your modem is on.  And set to "Direct" mode, I think.  Also, make sure your BSDSocket emulation is turned OFF, in this case...

Then, open the emulation and load a terminal, and see if you can type an AT command to the modem.  Once you get the emulation talking to the modem, the rest of the TCP install should be similiar to a real Amiga.  Of course, I don't know if Termite TCP works in UAE.  I've never heard of anyone trying it.  I believe I remember someone said they got Genesis running, though.  So it might be possible...

Anyhow, after doing all of this, it probably won't be as stable a connection as letting Windows handle it, and then using the BSDSocket emulation.  (The BSDSocket emulation is certainly more tested than the serial device!)

@llWrath

I tried using the Windows dialer ........
When I start IBrowse it drops me out of UAE and
back to the Windows screen. Don't know why yet....

I'm going to try the game port thing.
I really would prefer to use Termite TCP, its very
stable on my Amiga. I don't find Genesis very stable
on my Amiga, I quit using it quite sometime ago.

Bummer.  What happens if you try to open IBrowse with the BSDSocket emulation turned off?  Will it let you view local .html files?  Maybe there's something causing IBrowse, itself, to bomb out?  (MUI problem?)  Might not be a TCP/IP issue, at all...

With the BSDSocket turned off it will let me view local files.

I tried setting the game port settings but Termite still
doesn't reconize Com2 as a serial port.
It expects some kind of device name other than just Com2.

MUI seems ok, IBrowse won't even boot if MUI isn't right.

As I said .. I'm new to UAE ... got alot to learn.

I seem to remember the documentation saying serial support isn't very good.  Local html files would open without any TCP support/stack at all.

The BSD support works flawlessly if you have a working IP connection in windows (however it might be connected), if you're trying to run an IP stack within UAE it might well be conflicting with Windows!

Pretty good. Still working on my projects off and on. You?

All that would depend on Windows, since it connects through the windows tcp interface.

Can't say much more, though. I have AIAB set up, but every time I try using IBrowse, it bombs out. I thought about installing 3.9 on it instead, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have "BSDsocket libray emulation" turned on.

I have never used WinUae to get onto the interneet as all the docs i've read suggest not doing that.

I've always connected via windows then turned on the emulation. I have OS3.9

I can load up all three browsers with no difficulty. and reading local pages can be done without being online, of course.

check that your MUI classes are recent. all should be well.
