WinUAE install help needed
« on: May 08, 2004, 03:23:56 PM »
I'm trying to get WinUAE installed and have a problem.

I've D/L'ed a guide file called 'Quick OS3.9 installation guide for WinUAE.
I've followed the instructions (I think) for setting up
the config file and it should be ready to create the
Emergency_Boot disk.
When I click OK to start I get an 'Illegal Operation'
error and close. I have no idea why I'm getting this
error.
Any ideas ??
Also I assume a kick file is required, I have a kick
grab from my A3k (3.1 rom).
Do I just copy this file into the dir where I have
WinUAE installed, or what??
I put the kick.rom file in the WinUAE dir.

As always.. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a blank .ADF file in df0: ?  (Remember WinUAE doesn't handle PC floppies.)

I haven't gotten to an ADF yet.
Also I don't know how to create an ADF disk yet.
Thats another question, How ??

WinUAE doesn't even run yet, when I try to start
WinUAE after creating the config I get an 'Ilegal Operation'
error. 'Page Falt' and it closes the prg.

What version of Windows do you have? Sounds like 98.
Do you have DirectX 8 or later installed?
Could be a memory related problem.

Yes  thats fine, although it can be put anyway, esp. if you have more than one kickstart file.

Yes i'm running DirectX 8 and Windows 98 SE.

I've looked through all the old posts but didn't
find anything relating to this problem.

To create a new .ADF file you click the "floppies" tab from the main screen.  There should be a button toward the bottom that will "create standard floppy".

Still having a problem getting WinUAE setup.

I'm getting a alternating flashing yellow and black
screen when I start UAE. The startup should bring up
the WB screen correct ??

Do I need to copy WB 3.1 into the dir before I can load
in OS 3.9 ??

You don't need an ADF to install OS3.9.

To check your WinUAE installation do the following:

1. Start WinUAE and click on OK. A requester complaining about missing kick.rom file should appear twice then WinUAE should quit. (Well, do not call your kickstart file "kick.rom" because with this name it is loaded automatically.)

2. Start WinUAE, go to the ROM tab, click on "..." near Kickstart and choose your kickstart file. Then click Ok. Now you should see the animation asking for a floppy disk.

If you get the illegal operation here, probably your kickstart file is not good. AFAIK the rom from an A3000 ist not a good choice. Try to get one from an A500.

Once you see the disk animation, the emulator is running correctly and you can start installing OS3.9.

Thomas

The newer versions of WinUAE (8.22.7 and up I think) won`t work on Win98 without updated ASPI drivers.
Trying to run it without them will cause WinUAE to crash when it tried to mount the CD ROM.
On schedule, and suing

ASPI is an abstraction layer which allows to send the same SCSI commands to both SCSI and ATAPI (IDE) devices. Similar to scsi.device on the Amiga.

It can be downloaded from Adaptec. Direct link to the download page

@Thomas
Thanks .. Got them, I'll install them shortly.

Are these drivers what is causing the the Yellow screen ??

I've tried 3 different rom images and still get the
Yellow screen.

Yellow screen ? No. Windows blue screen is caused by missing drivers.

Yellow screen can be either wrong processor or the Kickstart assuming some hardware that is not emulated.

First try a 68040. If it still gives a yellow screen, get another ROM file from an A500 as I told before. Might be the A3000 ROM needs an MMU or something which is not emulated.
