@RMC64

A1000's bootup with a weird doot-doodley-doodley-doo type sound.

Hi RMC64,

Click on my handle to see info on my powered up 2000.
Most games play from HD. one game "Birds of prey" is picky and wants you to stick  in the disk and warm reboot. One other game "Strike Fleet" needs you to boot into 68000.

The default error beep is not an actual audible sound, as from what I understand, there is not an onboard hardware speaker like the PC's. From what I remember reading from the Autodocs ( I could be wrong here), the error beep is simulated by a flash of the screen.

I kind of mis-stated.  You are correct, there is no hardware speaker.  The default beep is a flash of the screen, and a software generated beep out the regular Amiga audio-out.  In WB2.04 and later, you could customize this "beep" or replace it with a sound sample.

Hi

This consist (more or less) of the Horn Motif from Richard Wagner's "Siegfried", the third part of the "Ring des Nibelungen", transposed four half-tones down. The diagnostic routines of the boot ROM of the A1000 were written by a man called Siegfried Bleher.

Wow! That is an amazing fact. Thanks for that. You just gave me a reason to unpack my old A1000 and fire her up and give it a closer listen. I had forgotten about that little chime.  :-o

Well I just fired the old girl up, but not a peep out of her during the boot. The rest of the machine is working fine however. I tried out 'Say' and recieved normal response from the sound.

I am not even sure now if it ever did chime during bootup now that I think of it???? It has been so long now...

Did all revisions of the A1000 chime on bootup, or did someone just pull my leg!!!

Hi

As I know, all A1000 play this melody during system check. The melody is played only after a cold start (power on) just before the floppy disk drive is accessed to read the Kickstart disk that should be placed there.
Maybe your A1000 has a rework to use a Kickstart ROM instead of a disk ? Then this sound may not occur.
Or you have powered-on your monitor too late ?

The tones are output over various channels, so you should even hear something if your left or right audio-channel is dead.

Ahh yes, I was busy, but just got back to the A1000 and checked the connections, and cranked the volume to the max. Sure enough, The chirp is there again! It seems to be very low in volume, and with the noise of the hard drives on the A590 beside it, I could not hear it before. With age comes confusion, memory loss and now hearing I guess.

Relearn something old every day!

I have a wav sample of the A1000 boot chime now if anyone still wants it.
I made it the default Windows start sound in my Windows XP sound scheme for old times sake...
