Packet Request Type Unknown!!
« on: May 06, 2004, 03:38:17 PM »
Just installed OS3.9 onto my CD32 and now I keep on getting a error as below when I try to do lots of different things.

Packet Request Type Unknown

It happens when I try to copy files from cd to HD and when trying to open Amiga Guide files on CD.

I have been told that it has something to do with the cd.device. But I am not 100% sure on how to fix it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

it seems that your CD-filesystem "cd.device" doesn't support every command ("packet") required by AmigaOS 3.9.
You should try to use the CacheCDFS CD-Rom filesytem instead. This is part of the OS 3.9 distribution.

Would this not have been installed as part of the installation of OS3.9?

Only if you explicit select it in the installer window.

Start the installation again and select the "CD Rom driver" to be installed in the first window.

After installation you can set-up the driver using the CacheCDFS preference tool in the "prefs" directory of your system partition.

The CD32's filesystem can cope with OS3.9 and the installation CD perfectly.

No you shouldn't! Support for the CD32's CD drive (including cd.device) is in the CD32's 3.1 ROM. There is no need to install anything extra like CacheCDFS, which will be ignored anyway. This applies to OS3.1, OS3.5, and OS3.9, but don't install the ROM update from Boing Bag 2 for OS3.9 because it breaks CD drive support.

'Packet Request Type Unknown' suggests (to me) that the CD32 has a faulty CD drive, more specifically, the lens could be faulty or damaged. Either that or the CD is damaged.

Steve.

Definitely not!

The 'Packet Request Type Unknown' error (AmigaDos error 209, ERROR_ACTION_NOT_KNOWN) is returned if a handler doesn't support or even know the requested packet (action).
If  the disk is faulty or the drive cannot read it, the AmigaDos error 225 ERROR_NOT_A_DOS_DISK ("not a valid DOS disk") would be returned AFTER a requester "Volume ...has read/write error" has occured.

EDIT - I doesn't own a CD32, maybe the CD Rom handler is so bad programmed, that it returns the wrong errorcodes and doesn't follows the standard (wouldn't be astonished, have a look at the Amiga's Ram-handler, that is so bad programmed (full of bugs) that it is a wonder that the system is stable :-().

No, this error more likely implies (as you thought) that OS 3.9 is trying to use a packet (feature) not supported by cd filesystem used in CD32.

Using OS 3.9 with 3.1 Kickstart ROM I think, and CD filesystem in 3.1 is very outdated.

But it works perfectly for me! :-?  :-)

My CD32 with SX32 Pro and OS3.9 BB2 (but without the optional ROM update) ran for years using the CD support built into the 3.1 ROM without ever encountering an error with the CD drive reading CD's, even with the OS3.9 CD.

Since only one version of the 3.1 ROM was used in all CD32's (40.60 IIRC, and was unique to the CD32, being different to the 3.1 ROM's in A1200's because of Akiko support etc.) I can't think of an explanation for the inconsistency, other than a damaged CD or lens mechanism.

Steve.

-EDIT- If the CD lens had become mis-aligned in this particular CD32, would that produce the 'Packet Request Type Unknown' error?

No, this should result in requesters popping up that contain the text "Volume..has a read/write error" and let you chose "Retry" or "Cancel". If you select "Cancel" this should result in ERROR_NOT_A_DOS_DISK ("not a valid DOS disk" and an icon with the title "unreadable" should occure on the WB). Maybe the "read/write error" requester has to be canceled a few times, before the system stops trying to read and returns the NOT_A_DOS_DISK error.

This kind of error (bad CD lins) should NEVER result in a "Packet request type unknown" error.

But I've also no idea, why it is working for you (StevenJGore) and not for Zetec-S. I would try to use the OS 3.9 CD rom filesystem, you couldn't damage anything and if it doesn't work you could swap back.

Thanks for your help.

I installed the two Boing Bags yesterday, and now when I copy files from CD to HD it works perfectly.

Still get the error when trying to open a file using Multiview, but this might just be something to do with multiview.

Did have a look on the Web and found a few reports from 2000 when people had the same problem after installing 3.9.
