Samsung SyncMaster 170MP
« on: May 01, 2004, 08:13:31 PM »
I was looking to get another (working) monitor for one of my beasts and happened to notice on the Big Book of Hardware the Samsung SyncMaster 170MP. So, I did a search and found a new one thru Google for $475....for a 17" LCD nicely compatible monitor. Then I checked eBay, as all good Amigans must do, and found one about to be sold like tomorrow with a "buy it now" at around that price and the bid quite a bit lower. But I don't know much about the monitor. It has a horizontal synch rate of 31-80khz or so and 15 khz. I guess that means there's a gap between the 31 and the 15, right? Does anybody know anything about this monitor? I sure as heck would love an LCD 17" monitor to view my animations on! :-P

The 15 kHz is for the S-video or composite input only.  The VGA port only syncs down to 30 kHz.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Okay! So that means you don't get the "Out of synch range" message on boot up, right? Cool. What about this: years ago I noticed that most LCD projectors seemed to have a horizontal range down to 15 khz, so can I assume that they would be good for the Amigas...assuming you had $900 to throw out for a projector? See, I have this little side room in my basement and I thought it would be awesome to have my own projector room down there.... red velvet chairs and a huge screen... popcorn.. sitting there in the dark watching my animations flicker on the wall. Sigh.
I've had several techie folks tell me that the Amiga display was inferior to modern machines because of this low horizontal number, that it wouldn't go to the higher resolutions, but I am not sure why the super-high resolutions would be vaulable for most applications. I am a 30 year CADD technician and 1024x768 seemed pretty good to me. Any thoughts on that topic?

The reason for low resolutions on a 15KHz signal is down purely to bandwidth - you simply cannot fix that many pixels on a 15KHz clock. The Amiga SuperHiRes was a dirty,
dirty hack which looked terrible on most displays.

By the way: http://www.garagemaxx.de/

Like that for your projector room? :)

YES! I want to play Zool on a 5'x8' wall!! ON the other hand, maybe with a HUGE screen I could play Moria large enough to recognize some of the itsy-bitsy monsters. But you see what I mean! I figure when I have 3 toasters making my own private Babylon 5 movie I should show it on a big screen, so a 15" screen will work to do the initial work and then a PROJECTOR ROOM for the final showing. That is, after all, why I bought my first A2000....which by the way has never failed to boot since 1988! That's why I love Amigas. Kiki Stockhammer helped, I must admit. 8-)
