WinUAE question
« on: May 01, 2004, 07:07:09 PM »
I haven't even tried to setup WinUAE yet, just a question
about it before I try.

Does it allow access to the serial port and other
devices??

Can I run IBrowse etc. ??

I only have a couple Apps. on Windows I use, CD Rom burner
and PhotoShop.

Been thinking I could strip all the other junk off and
run WinUAE

What do you think ??

Like the others, I'd answer yes to all three questions...

Now, keep in mind, though, that emulation makes for a strange Amiga.  Depending on how high-spec the system you have is, you'll get varying performance levels out of the emulated Amiga.

You'll certainly want to use the UAE-Picasso 96 RTG drivers.  This helps the Amiga behave more predictably.  Especially on the slower systems.  The AGA and ECS emulations are kinda strange.  Some things will be lightning quick, and others will be slow, compared to even a modest Amiga.  It wasn't until I picked up my current 3ghz P4 that I really thought the AGA emulation was about the same speed as an A4000 with 3640 card.  I'm still not sure the AGA modes are as fast as my A4000 with CyberStorm 060.  BUT, the emulated processor is about 400x faster.  So, as you can see, that makes for a really strange system!  However, using the P96 drivers makes the machine behave more balanced.  It pretty soundly thrashes my A4000 in an RTG-enabled usage comparison.  Which is about as scientific as you can get, as the emulation optimizations totally void most benchmarks.

No downside except that most Windows software is a lot more advanced than the Amiga counterparts that you'll be running in WinUAE. :-)

This probably isn't a problem for you as you want to run the Amiga stuff (and I'm not trying to convince you otherwise).

You can even burn CDs from inside WinUAE with Amiga burning software if you like.

The Down side, if you can call it that, is you won't ever switch your Real Amiga on anymore.

@Bloodline

Hmmm  :-)  I don't think that will happen.
I bought this A3k in '91' (new) and have
went through several PC's but I still prefer
my Miggy.

I swear, you will prefer WinUAE over the real thing. This is because with WinUAE you have both, an Amiga and a PC on the same computer. You can run Internet Explorer to browse the net while you run YAM to fetch you mail, you run RealPlayer to listen radio while you use TVPaint to make a drawing. The list can be continued forever, you can just use the best of both worlds at the same time.

Bye,
Thomas

The only downside about WinUAE for me is Octamed 5.04...

(i`ve got Med soundstudio V6 for the PCside and souundstudio for my real amiga)

But, I`ve never managed to tweak it just right to have a clear stutter free session...(Athlon2.8Ghz...512Mb DDR400 MEM)

Perhaps this new `May` release, huh?

[ do i now have to emulate a PPC ? ]

The downside is that you can't read Amiga floppy disks without a Catweasel floppy-drive controller and you can't run PowerPC Amiga software because the Intel/AMD doesn't emulate it in WinUAE.  Other than that you're pretty well off!

Only downside is you cant read real amiga disks. Plain and simple thats it. Well you cant runn PPC stuff as well, but there isnt anything PPC you need to have anyway. Thats why I got a Pegasos. With a Catweasel II PCI card you can hook up a floppy drive and read amiga disks through UAE, and even use a real Amiga keyboard. I'll be putting two on order soon. One for the PC and WinUAE, the other for my Pegasos II.

@melott

 Well I dont know if I agree with everyone. I would never prefer WinUAE over my Amiga..........I even prefer my A600 over WinUAE.
WinUAE does have major problems, like not all software works..........and when it does, it won't run like on your Amiga. How do I know this?  because I made an exact copy of my REAL Amiga harddrive and put it in WinUAE emulated in 040 (my real amiga is 030)  and it still does not really compare, although in Gfx Card mode it functions way better............except again, when trying to play games or use SCALA for instance, you have that screen switching problem.

 But you know one thing? If you need a Gf card for your real Amiga........then your better off with WinUAE because it will use the power of the Gfx Card including the RAM..................right now I have 8Mb of ChipRAM and 512Mb of fast RAM!!! using an ATI ALL in WOnder Pro gfx card with Picasso drivers.

 I suggest when playing games..........select SCANLINES so that the game looks like it does on a real TV!  especially if your PC gf card has Video Out.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...
