I need your help.
« on: April 30, 2004, 03:16:57 PM »
I'm setting up a small web site.  The basis of which is this....

I have never programmed in C on the Amiga.  In fact, most of my experience of computer programming has been based on assembler in one form or the other.

I am seriously struggling to find good solid information to develop software for the Amiga, especially the likes of P96 info or AROS sample code.

So I am toying with the idea of putting as much source code on the site as I can, besides links to other sites that new developers will find useful.

If you have any source code or files for DE, AROS, 680x0 assembler, C. In fact anything programming related, I would like to know.

I do intend being selective and putting the latest chunky to planer routines in here is a no go.  I need useful routines that others can refer to i.e. Opening Windows & Screens - simple vector routines, small 3d routines.  OpenGL examples - animating sprites - 16 & 32bit Screens  Stuff that will save people time and educate aswell.

If you have any other suggestions then please.....feel free.

I have been playing with C and C++ on the Amiga for a while and would be more than willing to contribute something if you like.

I have to admit I've all but given up on the Amiga platform so if you get up and going, I may well send over the source for all my DE bits and bats.

What other languages (specifically) are you after?  I'll have a dig around and see if I have any C/C++, 680x0, AMOS (sorry!) or E code.  What happened to E anyone?  Best damned language on the miggy.  Come to think of it, what happened to Wouter?

Hoya!

I have always heard, and thus thought, that AMOS, albeit not perfect, was quite a good language.
Am I wrong?

As far as BASIC goes, it blasted AmigaBasic out of the water (just remembered, Amigabasic was written by mickeysoft wasnt it?  Hmm, explains a lot).

It was quick (esp. AmosPro & Compiler), had some real good functions in it (esp. sprite handling etc). Initially it was better than Blitz but I think Blitz took over later.

Amos just wasnt OS friendly (i.e. writing WB apps was a nightmare).  I think because of that, you got mocked merely for knowing what it was.  Shame.  Was a good easy first step for getting into Amiga programming.  Real good of quickly knocking up prototypes too.

You might check his website.  I think he's one of the developers at Tao-Group.

I am looking for links and example code for whatever you have to offer.

It's the lack of resourses that I am going to aim for so if you have something that does something interesting, then let me know.

For example.  Speaking personally.  If you have a small 3d vector routine in Amos or Blitz then I will put it on the site.  Quite fankly, I could understand and discect the basic code much easier than C/C++.

Do you see where I am coming from?

I do intend running some kind of tutorial aswell.  From "hello world" to basic OS functions.  I don't have too much time on my hands but I am determined to make an impact.

@DRWHO

What can you give?

Downloads, ANSI source code.  ASM.  You name it, if it's constructive and educational then I am interested.

What about actual tutorials.  Does anyone have anything on paper that could bring modern Amiga developers up-to-date with the latest information,  and I don't mean a tutorial about programming the OCS or ECS or even AGA.  Tutorials and examples on programming your P96 or Voodoo.

@PhatBoiCollier

I used to be a seasoned DE developer myself.  I had scroller code and map editors that pushed the software to it's limits.  Send anything you think is appropriate.

I intend including a "This site would not be possible without.....?" section.

I will include the name of every contributor.

For those of you interested.  My first draft of the site is up and running.  Nothing more than the final visual look.

Your opinions are welcome.

If you have any code.  Now is the time to start sending it.

Have tried it in AWeb and it looks OK.  If anyone has any problems with any other Amiga browser.  Please let me know.

Have you posted this on AROS-EXEC yet?

@Magic-Merl

It's a great idea, although I believe there are some similar sites up already (AmigaGuru appears fairly stagnant ATM and source code sharing will be added later to AmigaShare).

Although I don't know of any similar sites active ATM :-D

So far I am not promoting the site too much.

I am gathering sources from Aminet and programmers who are keen to show their code.

I am going to take this opportunity to learn to develop for the Amiga myself. I will place simple-sample programmes, hopefully to encourage others developing on from their a very basic tutorial on how to get up and running.

Since my original post I have decided to setup at WinUAE section.  Here I will have links to Hard Files which have all the neccessary software to be able to program from the start.

I am more interested in MOS & AROS code at the mo.  I think if people knew where to go and how to get started, the ball may start to roll, for AROS in particular.

I have a basic (first draft of the site up and running.  There is no content yet so don't go there expecting too much.

I have not done work on "modern" Amiga's such as AGA systems, systems with RTG boards and such. I prefer to work on projects targeted at OS 3.1, 3.5 & 3.9. I have worked on some assembly language projects under 1.3 (a fast joystick routine, floppy drive head control driver, etc) for fun and testing purposes, but, most of my stuff is done in c. I have started working with Hisoft C++ to do some oop work on the Amiga as well.

I would like to be involved in tutorials, especially dealing with topics that I find very fascinating, such as low-level intuition coding and such. Beginner topics like working with Windows and gadgets and the like would be very enjoyable as well.

I had actually considered putting together a site of my own dedicated to coding on the Amiga. A few others had mentioned doing the same here though, so, I thought that I would join up with those efforts instead. Unfortunately, to date, none of those other projects have materialized.

Thanks,
Mike

@ drwho

Get working.  I am going to have some code on my site within a week.  If I could put something on the tutorials page also, I would greatly appreciate it.

OS3.1 to 3.9 coding is fine.  There are sections that cover Asm & C so your code will fit fine here.

Your intuition programs, I assume, are system friendly so still apply, in the main, to AOS4.

Why not send some samples.  Please make sure you credit yourself on the source you send to me.
