Can I use a 9 pin PC serial mouse on an Amiga 1200? or are they incompatible?

Not without modifying it.  Check Aminet for instructions.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Not really.  You'd need an adaptor.  And then it would only work in Workbench.  And not very well, even then.

You're better off getting a PS2 -> Amiga adaptor.  I run the Mr. Mysza, and have been reasonably satisfied.  It's available from places like Software Hut.

True... But then you have a nearly infinite supply of PS2 mice you can use on the Amiga.  And they're hardware compatible, so old games, demos, etc will respond to the mouse, just like it was an Amiga one.  (The converted serial mice will only work in workbench)

And you don't have to worry about things like getting old Amiga mice with bad buttons, unergonomic designs, stupid mouseballs that fall out, etc...

Plus, if you do use workbench, you can use the scroll wheel functions and extra buttons.

To me, I bought mine years ago, and I think it was a reasonable expense.  Of course, if you're not planning on using it much, a real Amiga mouse may be the better choice.  And either is surely better than trying to modify a serial mouse.

I'm new to the whole Amiga world so I really don't know how much I plan on using it.

There's a nice looking Amiga mouse on ebay right now I think i'll get. Never used as far as I can tell :)

If I do get serious about Amigas, I guess it'd be cool using an optical mouse for it :)

I use a Mroocheck PC-Mouse adaptor from Elbox. It's for serial mice. It works everywhere, in demos, games and old stuff. Workbench is only needed for the extra buttons and the wheel.

But if i knew it would be so hard to find serial mice nowadays, i would go for a PS/2 solution.
Well, it does it's work now, so i am satisfied... :-)
