OS39 and Fast IDE controller driver ATA3.driver problem!
« on: April 28, 2004, 02:29:48 PM »
Hello!

I have one more issue that I needs help with. When I have installed OS3.9 and installs the drivers for the Elbox Fast ATA controller, all colours on the icons disappears. All the icons in all directories becomes 2 coloured, blue and grey or something like that. The Screenmode is still my Mediator/voodoo setting on 1024x768 RGBA, It is either 24 bit or 32bit colours.

I think it is when I install the CD-Rom driver files from Elbox's discette, that this happens.

Is there anyone else that have had problem with this? Is there anyone out there, that can tip me on where the problem is?

Thanks in advance!
/Jörgen

--- Edit ---
The cd-rom driver from elbox is the AllegroCDFS V3.3

Not having much luck these days ;-)

Have you tried erasing all files ending with .prefs in the ENV-archive drawer in Prefs, and setting it all up once again?

Maybe you could just start the Screenmode prefs, and set the value of colours to a higher number, but this sounds to obvius.

Did you manage to get your SFS installed correctly?

You are right, I have had no luck with my amiga setup lately...  :-) but I'm keeping trying...  :-) Some day I will succeed... I won't give up...  :-D

I have not had the time to test SFS again. I think I want to have my OS setup properly before I test to install SFS again.

No, I have not tried to erase all the .prefs files in env. If I do, my mediator and voodoo setup will dissappear, do I have to reinstall the mediator files then?

I thought it was some old library that overwrites a new version of that library or something like that, when I install the allegrocdfs V3.3 files. I can't understand how this installation can affect all my icons in all folders. Can't I overwrite all my .icon files with the .icon files from the os39 cd? But that is a real horsework...

Well I will try your tip anyway. Anybody else have some clue?

Could you make a complete list of features/programs you want to install ?

As I have almost the same setup as you and it is running fine, I perhaps could give you a step-by step instruction on how to get it all going.

My machine:

A4000D in a Mirage 4000 tower case
CSPPC 060/50+604e/233
128 MB RAM
Mediator PCI
Voodoo3 3000
FastATA 4000
eFlash 4000
X-Surf Ethernet
HyperCOM 3
Highway USB
10 GB Maxtor HDD on the first FastATA bus
DVD-ROM on the second FastATA bus
40 GB Quantum Fireball with SCSIDE-Adapter on the CSPPC
4x Yamaha SCSI CD-RW
external SCSI scanner
OS3.9 (first CD series)
PFS3

Bye,
Thomas

Well, Thomas will most likely be the best to consult on this one, as he has a lot of the same hardware as you do, and I don't bother setting up my Fast ATA for the A1200.

If you erase all the .prefs files, the only thing that will be done, is that all your changes on the workbench will be erased. You don't need to install any files afterwards, just open all the prefs tools you need, and save the changes to the the settings that you like.

If you wan't to see which files the CDFS install program copies, then select to have a log file. Then you can track the files from the install script, and manually owerwrite the needed files afterwards, if the script copies an older file than the one on your harddrive.

If this is like their IDEfix  card, there was something in 3.9's installer that said these devices had software  problems. You might want to check your CD. They may have you switch the scsi.device in the ROMupdate off.

Hello all, and thank you very much for your support. Without you I would have come nowhere.

When I started to upgrade my A1200, I had the goal of being able to play Quake II on my Amiga. I have also bought the nightlong 68k version and Myst that I also want to play. So, my complete Hardware list is this:

A1200
Fast ATA controller from Elbox
SD/FF Internal 2 chip
hypercom 3+
BPPC 603e/210 w. 060/50
256MB RAM
Elbox Tower
Mediator SX
Voodoo 4 4500
Fast ethernet card 10/100
Terratec soundcard 512i
WD harddrive 20GB
and a CD/RW on the second channel

So, what I want to do, is to install my OS39 with BB1 and BB2 on a partition of about 1,9GB that is using the SFS filesystem. Then I want to have the rest of the harddrive as one partition. There I want to install my three newly bought games, Nightlong, Quake II and myst.

I have also bought the Storm V4 C++ compiler that I want to use and I have also bought the Dopus magellan II that hopefully is in my mail this week.

Right now I have a working system on a partition with FFS. But all the colours on my icons is gone. This is what I have installed:

OS39
BB1
Picasso96
Mediator drivers
Fast ATA drivers
AllegroCDFS and here my Icons becomes two coloured and I have not installed anything since then.

I have'nt had any time to try your tips yet. I have a girlfriend also, that needs my attention :) But hopefully I will have time this weekend to try a new installtion from scratch.

Was there an installer script for the CDFS ? If yes, what did it do ?

IIRC my copy of AllegroCDFS consisted only of the file itself which I copied to L: and then created a mountlist for my CD-ROM drive.

Thomas

Hello Thomas!

Yes there is an install script that I executed. How do I create a mountlist manually? I have my CD-ROM on my second IDE channel. I think it has ID 3 so it would be the secondary slave then. What file do I copy to the L: directory?

AllegroCDFS. This is the program file, the only file needed.

How to create a mountlist ? Well, take the AmigaDOS manual, go to the section where the Mount command is explained and go through all the options available. Obviously options like Baud rate are not necessary for a disk device ;-)

Now that I think about it, there were also four ready-to-use mountlists in the AllegroCDFS drawer (CD0 to CD3, for each unit one). You should use CD3. Perhaps you need to change Device=scsi.device to Device=2nd.scsi.device if your FastATA uses 2nd.scsi.device.

BTW, you should not run a slave device alone on one IDE bus. If you have only one drive on a cable, it should be jumpered as master.

Bye,
Thomas

Hello!

I am now writing this message on my Amiga...   :)

But I have run into more problems. Now I can´t get my soundcard Terratec 512i to work properly.

I installed AHI 4.18 but I could not open the AHI prefs program so I installed the AHI V5.11 over V4.18. Now i could open up the prefs program, but no sound output from the soundcard. I rebooted my computer and tried again.

Now It wants openpci.library???? Why? I tried to reinstall the Version 4.18 of AHI but with the same result. As soon as I press the play button in amplifier V2.34 then my Amiga wants the openpci.library...

What have I done wrong?

I am really astonished how someone can create such a mess !

It does not matter whether you install AHI 4 or 5. Both should allow the prefs program to open (AHI even comes with its own version of the prefs program) and neither of them contains a driver for a Terratec soundcard nor a reference to openpci.library. The Terratec driver should come from Elbox and use pci.library. If you installed another Terratec driver you shouldn't wonder that it needs another library.

Well, if the Terratec driver comes from Martin Blom himself or another free programmer, it probably does not use a dedicated PCI library but the generic openpci.library which should work with many PCI boards. But AFAIK support for Mediator by openpci has been dropped.

Thomas

Hello Thomas!

And thanks for all your help.

I uninstalled all the AHI files and then I reinstalled the AHI 4.18. I can´t still open the AHI prefs so I have to copy the prefs program from version 5.11.

Now the request for openpci.library disappeared. So something in AHI wanted openpci.library.

Anyway, now I can open the AHI prefs and I can start the amplifier without problem, but I hear no sound. Where is the sound? and yes, I have tried every output from the soundcard and I have tried all 4 units in AHI prefs.

I am a little confused though, because all the sliders in AHI prefs program are dimmed, except for the frequency slider and channels slider. Should I not be able to adjust the volume?

In the Amplifier configuration, go to the X-Audio/AHI output configuration and choose AHI. Default is X-Audio which uses the Amiga custom chips.

Then use the Mixer from the Multimedia CD to check if the volume is set correctly.

In AHI only features supported by the driver are enabled. To set the volume, use the Mixer.

In order to check if AHI sends its output to the sound card you can enter the following Shell command:

copy s:startup-sequence audio:

A short crash should come from the loudspeakers.

Thomas

Hello again!

Your help is very much appreciated...

Ok, I have already tested the AHI output in Amplifier, but I have missed the mixer thing... :) I will test it tonight.

By the way, I followed your description about installing SFS, but it seems to refuse to work on my amiga... Well for now I have one 1,9GB partition with FFS and the rest of the harddrive remains unpartitioned until I can get the SFS to work.

I did exactly as you described, and the drive shows up and seems to work, but as soon as I try to create a directory on the new partition the AOS freezes. I can still move the mouse but nothing happens when I try to click on things on the WB screen.
