PowerIcons and Dopus5.82
« on: April 27, 2004, 03:00:21 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've recently started to use PowerIcons with my Workbench as a PNG Icon replacement for the desktop, and it works very well indeed.  However, unfortunately I've had to give up using Directory Opus 5.82 MagellenII because PowerIcons doesn't appear to be compatable with it.

For some reason if I start a Dopus session in the Workbench:use mode the PNG Icons will appear as white boxes with an arrow in the top left hand corner.  My guess is that Dopus is trying to remap the icons and PowerIcons is then conflicting with it, or something.

The Icons themselves display fine as my AmiDock bars remain unaffected by the Dopus session, and also if I start a Dopus session whilst some Windows are already open on the Workbench then those icons display fine, but new windows opened after the dopus session has started carry the above problem, as do all icons mounted on the desktop.

I was wondering if there was some way to configure Dopus such that it doesn't mess with the Icon system used by Workbench at all.  Has anyone else managed to get PowerIcons working from a Dopus Session?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Nope, as of now you cant use Dopus 5 with powericons. I would recomend giving Diskmaster II a try. Its a good file manager and its free. It doesnt have aworkbench replacementmode like Dopus 5 does, just a straight filemanager. If you want to use PNG icons, your just going to have to decide what you want more. Dopus or the new looks.

On a side note. This goes with MorphOS users too. You cant use  dopus since MOS uses PNG icons as well, but if you use the old icon lib from OS3.x you can use it.

Lots of people have suggested I use DiskMaster II, so the program obviously has a rather large fan base, but I tried it and instantly completely despised it.

I admit I've not given the program a full chance, I didn't bother to get to know the various functions of it and how it can be properly configured... but it's just one of those programs that I've started, taken one look at and instantly hated.

I think the big annoyance for me was that there was no way (no obvious way at least) to run Disk Master II using the current Workbench screen, I had to flip between the Workbench and the Disk Master screen.  Since Disk Master's own screen is even ugglier than a non-powericon'd Dopus... I decided to leave it there.  It'd be great if you could double-click an empty space on the desktop and a diskmaster box would instantly appear.  I think I've become too much of a Dopus junky!

Maybe I should give the program another visit, and see if I can get it working the way I want.  In fairness, I never gave the program more than a passing look.

Nope I've tried it again and really don't like it at all.  The fact that you're forced to switch screens all the time defeats the object for me.

I'll just have to put up with Workbench I suppose!

Thanks for the help anyway

Put up with Workbench? Ouch. Better use Magellan's predecessor:

Directory Opus 4

I use my Magellian on my emulation (w/PowerIcons) AND my peg. sure, the icons that happen to be PNG can't be seen properly, but I don't use Magellian as a workbench replacement. only as a file manager. and I love being able to click anywhere on the screen and have a lister pop up. I've always had my listers use Names - so i can see all the useful info I need (date, size, version, etc).

On my real amiga I used magellian as a Wb replacement, but not being able to really do that now isn't that big a problem. The emulation has alot of memory and so does the peg.
sure, i've had to configure a few things differently, but it's such a useful program, it's worth the (slight) trouble!

I hate DiskMaster, as well. I just love my shell, or DOpus 4.
