Closeup of A500 floppt drive innards
« on: April 25, 2004, 02:09:55 AM »
Hi,

Would anyone here be able to take a picture of the inside of an A500 floppy drive? just the motor and shaft of the bit that moves the read/write head up and down.

I'm trying to fix my broken drive.

thanks if you can help :)

You'll need to tell us the make and model of your drive, as the model used has changed many times during the years.

Actually .. I'm kinda interested in this too...
I have an old floppy drive that doesn't spin.
It clicks like it wants to work but doesn't spin.
The wheel is free, I can reach in with a pencil
eraser and turn it easly.
I would be interested in if it can be fixed.
Has anyone had any success in fixing these??

Check to see if the rubber belt from the motor to the disk is still in place and in one part. Over the years some of them get brittle and seperate.

The irony here is that I have two JU253-033s sitting next to me but no digital camera at the moment.

I think the head moving mechanism on mine is gone bad. The head moves freely backwards (to the back of the drive) but then it doesn't seem to be able to move forward again :(

If I move it with my fingers, the head slides along the shaft quite easily. On my replacement drive (too big for the amiga and I can't ge disk checking working) the head doesn't budge at all if i manually try move it.

That shaft that the head slides back and forth on
is a Lead Screw type of thing and the head shouldn't
just slide. Its supposed to position the read head so
if the head slides easly without turning the shaft
then I'd say its not fixable.

I'll have to check this drive of mine and see if the
drive belt is ok............

It doesn't slide smoothly or anything. I think the part that the head uses to slide along it just isnt gripping it as well as it used to. It kinda pops up and then grinds along when I slide it. The working drive isn't movable at all.

I took apart one of my external floppy drives for my amiga 1000 and posted them at the following address:
