Quick question on A4000T motherboard RAM
« on: April 22, 2004, 08:43:56 PM »
I've got some RAM to install in my motherboard sockets. I'm just wondering what the appropriate layout is:

Should matching pairs be in opposite (IE, 1 and 3, 2 and 4) or adjacent slots (IE 1 and 2, 3 and 4).

Thanks

They ALL have to match. You can either install 1MB or 4MB modules. One tricky exeption would be two 8MB modules in slot 1 and 3, that about all the options you got.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

There is no reason I know of to install in matching pairs.  You can use anywhere from 1 to 4 Simms (4 MB Simms) consecutively.  I have heard you can use 8 MB Simms, and space them every-other slot, (still 16 MB) but I've never tried it.

Well, got it operational.

For future reference, 16MB in an A4000T definitely works with:
2 matching pairs in alternate slots.

Thanks everyone.

Regarding 8mb SIMMS: I can confirm that you can use two 8mb SIMMS on the A4000T motherboard. I have two EDO SIMMS in there now. (alternate slots)

Depends on what kind of SIMMS.  I have tried
8MB simms (PNY maybe?) that I bought at Best Buy
(before I knew any better).  My machine would not
recognize them.  Maybe it had something to do
with the density of the SIMM chips.  The point is
not all SIMMS will work.
