Using ->16MB mem cards in an ancient digicam
« on: April 19, 2004, 11:24:06 PM »
I recently acquired a medieval Ricoh RDC-4200 digital camera which, according to the manual and Ricoh's technical 'support', can use Smart Media cards up to 16 megabytes. Now would this mean that if I insert a 32MB SM card it will not be recognised at all? Or will it only see 16? Or less? Will it implode? Will it end all wars and solve worldhunger?

Oh and has anyone got any surplus SM cards? The current 4MB card it has is hardly sufficient :-)

Could just be nothing better was out back then. If it uses FAT32 should be no issue I'd imagine (unless the flash card reader was funky).

That was what I figured, the camera was launched in late 1998.

Not sure about your situation, but I had a camera (Olympus) that stated in documentation (I didn't read) that it couldn't use larger than a 32MB card.  So, of course, I bought it a 64MB one...  It recognized the size properly, but wrote completely corrupt data to the card after taking a picture.  I didn't realize this, either, until the camera crashed while trying to write the 2nd picture.  ;-)

A reset of the camera, though, and it was fine again.  Took back the 64MB card, and found two 32MB cards on clearance, so it was a happy ending.
