Help! I'm 'screwed'!!!
« on: April 10, 2004, 12:50:54 PM »
Argh!
I'm trying to get my A4000 mobo out of the (original) case in order to remove the batter (de-solder from underside) and about three of the motherboard screws are completely solid. I've tried different screwdrivers but the screws just don't budge, and are starting to get chewed already. What can I do to loosen them? I certainly don't fancy spraying wd40 on the mobo, lol.

The hard way ?

Tape the mobo to make sure nothing gets spilled under ICs or such like.

Find a small drill (1-2mm, depending on size of the screws).
Find someone with a steady hand.
Find someone holding prayers for your A4000  :-P

Good luck.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Another possibilty.

Tape the mo.........
Get an Dremel or such like with a cutting-blade.
Find some......
Find some......
Cut a new slit into the screw-head.

:-? How about using Vice-GripĀ© or similar locking pliers to grip the screw head from the outside?  Of course, you'll have to replace them altogether afterward, but you'll want to do that anyway.

I don't have any pliers that I'd be confident enough to use without the pliers slipping with the force and scraping the motherboard or knocking out an IC or cap somewhere... :-(

Got a picture? I'm alittle hazzy on where the battery is. Not sure I'd be willing to drill them out. Metal filings in a computer case. Ack. Not matter how careful I was, I wouldn't feel safe doing it.
Remove as much of the case and framework as you can. You might not need to remove the motherboard to get at the battery.

Hi Argo,
For pictures (not mine) of location of battery  see this.
Unfortunately, I was hoping to desolder the joints from the underside of the mobo to remove the battery, although it can supposedly done from the top with a little jiggery-pokery, so to say.
The computer is VERY dusty too, so I was looking forward to getting it all apart and giving it a proper clean :-(

I'm with Kronos,  choose a drill bit as large as the screw heads and drill away. Take care of those metal filings with some air and remove the studs with a small vice grip if they are tight.

-edit- pliers would work fine too..

The thing is, I am worried about swarfs of metal causing a short on the mobo somewhere; I have a can of compressed air, but all it would take is one little bit of metal to get caught somewhere and "pfff!"

I think if you intend to give it a good clean anyway, that might be the best bet.

Get someone to point the vacuum hose at the screw while you're cutting it. :-)

You might just have to desolder it from the topside.
Then again you could take it to a computer shop or electronics shop to see what they can do.
