replacing Celeron with P4 Intel
« on: April 09, 2004, 06:49:52 AM »
Ok, not an Amiga issue, in the least, but perhaps I can justify it somewhat by stating that I wish to make WINUAE load faster....

I have an emachine ( yes I know CHEAP!!) T1742 with IM845GL mobo running a Celeron 1.7 Ghz CPU, in a S478 Socket (400 MHZ Bus speed). Video is ATI Radeon 7000 (PCI).

I know for certain that I can handle at least a 2.0 Ghz Celeron as the same mobo is sold with this CPU in the T2042 model.

I have searched the internet, and found no definative info on this mobo, in regards to the max CPU it will run.

I have found a clearance sale locally that has a P4 Intel 2.4, Gz 400 Mhz bus, S478. The tech says it SHOULD work, but no guarentees. The price is less than 1/3 of one year ago.

Here's where you guys come in, as from all the PC forums I have scanned, Amigans seem to have the most knowledge and expertise in all matters technical in regards to PC's. (Why is that by the way???)

What do you think? Will the P4 Intel work on my mysterious Korean mobo? Will the extra cache (512K) improve performance significantly?

And more important, Will the Toronto Maple Leafs get their act together and start playing descent hockey for the playoffs??

I found this googling, most of which was in Chinese or some other Asian language.

Seems like it should be possible. Good Luck!

I have a mobo based on the 845GL-chipset, and it runs perfectly with a 2.4 GHz Williamnette Celeron.
The same mobo (It's a Dell Dimension 2400) can run with 3.06 GHz HT P4:s aswell, so there shouldn't be any problem.
Keep in mind that you might have to change your memory if you change bus speed.

Of, course, there might be some BIOS-specific limitations, but that's not very likely.

Do not forget to use a suitable cooler for your processor. Look at the the www.intel.com site for the power consumption. How many Watts do your PSU have?

The 512 kb cache gives you very much performance. Because the pinpeline to disassemble the instruction is very long. A Celeron P4 has lesser cache memory. That is why the performance is very bad.

Just look up the motherboard on the manufacturers site, and it should tell you the maximum and/or type of processors that the motherboard can take. It just must require a little more looking, as someone must have made it... Ah, the manufacturer is TriGem btw.

It'll have to be a 400MHz FSB Intel P4.  That might restrict you to pre 2GHz P4s, which weren't good processors, but will likely outrun your Celeron.

since I'm to lazy to look up the motherboard ... you can take a look at  Evergreen Tech  see if they have your machine listed for thier cpu upgrades ... you may be able to get a 2.6 Ghz running
Support AROS sponsor a developer.

Thanks for the info and the links guys.

Nil return on the 'Leafs' though?

I got them picked to go through to the Eastern Conference finals, but that might have been a bit optimistic, especially after watching how arthritic Belfour looked in game 1.  ;-)

As for PCs, I've been drinkin' a bit, and have no advice, other than to avoid Celerons like the plague.

I'm actually a Flames & Oilers fan but I wish to piss off a buddy of mine who is a rabid leafs fan...

It is a great Canadian tradition to hate the Leafs ya know...

About the 2.4 P4 Intel CPU I found... turns out to be a Celeron, explaining the cheap price...
Oh well . Glad I asked the guy again before buying it.

What made you think it was a P4 in the first place? To clear up some things said in this thread, especially as Amiga1260 said Celeron P4...

A Celeron is a Celeron and a Pentium 4 is a Pentium 4, there is no such thing as a Celeron P4 or any other combination.

hi there,

i was having the same problem trying to find out about this damn mobo. eventually i gave up and called my supplier for the details. they told me that i have the IM845GL model although my manual says its the IM845GV. well anyway, ahe gave me the spec for the GL model. i have a celeron 2.6 running in my system and i was told that i could upgrade up to a P4 (no idea of top speed), 400 fsb and up to 256 L2 cache. the woman told me a load more crapwhich i never understood (because im useless with these things!) and im sure she didnt either! i dont think anything else is relevant to what your asking but if you want the rest of the details then feel free to email me.

i spoke to my mate who told me the mobo is pretty limited and i qoute "i wouldn't even wipe my arse with it!". so do what i did, sell the thing and get yourself a decent board, there are some real cheap budget boards out there with high end spec!

anyway, hope this was of some help!
