A600 accelerators
« on: April 06, 2004, 01:14:30 AM »
Are there any A600 accelerators that are safe to run without extra cooling, and will fit without the case off?

I nearly brought an 030 card last year, but we couldnt get it to work. Just got a black screen when we powered on. Also, it was such a tight squeeze, we could hardly fit the hard drive in there at the same time. We had to take the mounting bracket off I remember correctly. Maybe it can be repaired. I dont know if it would be worth it though, to ship it back and forth halfway around the world..

There are only two A600 accelerators I know of, the Viper 620 and the Viper 630. You had the 630 one, I guess. You won't find the 620 these days, and even if you did, it still has the same weird "clip-over-the-68000" design and is really tight on space inside the A600 - in fact, being the forerunner of the 630, it wasn't designed as well and was prone to slipping off. It was a lot cooler but was half the speed of the 630.

I think there were no other A600 accelerators made. The A600 was not designed to be upgradable. The Viper 6x0 cards were pretty special.

theres four accelerators there for a600's..and yes I'm aware that they clip on the top of the existing cpu.

it doesnt look like there are any new a600 accelerators left in shops.. I've been searching and cant find any.

hmmm, interested in buying my A600, lock stock and barrel?  It already has a beefy external psu, a viper 630 with 32 mb RAM, the PCMCIA ethernet card, and an internal IBM 2.5" hd. 4GB I think in size - works great - I was using it for a webserver a couple years ago but then took it offline and it's been surfing the shelf since...

Interested?  I'm clearing out some amiga gear in my basement and would like to see it go to a good home....

I wrote you two PM's, then went to your site and found your email address and emailed you... ignore the PM's, lets talk by email. But yes I'm very interested. :)

The Apollo A630/50MHz was the fastest A600 CPU board, they also made 33MHz and 28MHz(?) versions as well.

They were supposed to run without any cooling, but from experience, they all seem to get really dodgy after about 10-30 minutes running with no cooling.

Unfortunately the PLCC socket to clip onto the 68000 is the only "easy" way to upgrade the CPU.  The expansion slot does not have the required control lines to run a CPU board.
The PLCC socket is not an ideal way of doing it as it tends to come loose and go intermittent over time.  Find some way to fix the CPU board down somehow.

My A600 is currently fitted with an A630/33 and a small fan over the CPU.  It runs well and is quite reliable.

If you need another CPU board, Graham C from Compkarori (Wellington) had a spare A630 in near new condition some time ago.  Don't think he's sold it yet.
