THE X-MIGA PROJECT......
« on: April 05, 2004, 03:40:42 PM »
Ok, it's now official.  I will take Bill Gate's brain child and turn it against it's creator.

As most of you know, the hated X-Box is sold at a loss to flood the market and take over the game system scene.  Many out there have succesfully hacked into the said "box of darkness" and done many wonderous things, in the process making Billy very, very mad.  I plan to do the same.

I am almost done adding a second Hard Drive chassis with sellection switch so I can have the normal HD (to sneak past those stupid X-Box live scans) and a 60 Gig. HD. for da good stuff.

My plan is this.  First a stable install of linux.  Then once I have that all smooth, UAE.  Once I have that running w/o a prob. I'll get down to it and see what I can pull off w/ Amithilon (spelling?)

My final creation will be not only a super fast Amiga at M$'s expense, but a server so I can play Game Cube Games on line

I'm not sure you'll get Amithlon runing on that without any drivers :-/

Eh.... My bro back in OZ told me he was already running Amiga games on his modded XBox, so obviously there is already a UAE port. He was asking me if I could remember what games were good so I dare say he also had quite a few provided.

The only thing that would make Bill Gates very mad would be if NO ONE bought the X-Box.  Exactly as you said, MS sells them at a loss to try to take over the game system scene.  Why would helping prop up their sales numbers piss off Gates???  He doesn't care what the systems are used for, so long as he can claim he sold them!  With friends helping like this, who needs enemies?

If you really want to do it well, skip the X-Box, and use a regluar PC with Linux.  Better performance, cheaper, and more case options (especially if you go with a mini or micro ATX).  No money AND no market share for MS.  :-)

They sell at a loss but they make the money back on the software and if you dont buy xbox software he loses out its the same thing with printers its cheaper to buy a new one than buy new factory cartridges. :-)
I once had an amigaone xe but sold it .

The standard Xbox is seriously crippled as a PC.  The main problem is the lack of memory.  64M is really not enough to run a full modern Linux distribution.  Upgrades to 128M are expensive and require surface mount soldering.  Add to that the lack of expansion capability, and the current state of the Linux ports to the Xbox and it's not a real good deal.

My advise would be to keep the Xbox for games, and get a cheap SFF PC for runing Linux.

BTW, most consoles are sold below cost.  Even the PS was like that.  The makers make most of their money on licensing software.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

DING DING DING!  Exactly!  Unlike a printer manufacturer, MS doesn't NEED to make money on the X-Box.  They have a monopoly on Windows and Office to make money from.  The X-Box was created to gain market share, and slow down Sony and Nintendo.  The X-Box was designed as a money-loser from the start.  It's entire existance was to gain market share.  Which you're helping them do.

OK OK, I think you are all geting the wrong Idea.  This isn't a "hey lets make the best Friggin' Amiga ever" thing.  It's a "Hey let's do exactly what Billy Gates is trying to sue people for (unsuccessfully I might add) and see how far we can go" thing.  I already have the adapter that turns a game port into a standard USB port so I'm already that far a head....

oh, and the market share thing, I bought it used......

Just understand.......

THIS IS FOR FUN!!!!!! well and to fart in M$'s general direction too

So c'mon, stop with the philosphical, hardware restricting, helping yer enemies mumbo-jumbo.  The best reply so far was that someone else is doing this exact same thing with most likly UAE and I want to do it too!!!

Oh, and the Game Cube Ref. was for WARP PIPE, the software tunnel that lets you play system link games over the internet.  see it at warppipe.com

HAVE fun with Amiga BOYS!  That's what keeps it alive!!!!

SEE YA, MY BRUTHAHS!!!!!

PS- WORMS 3D is really REALLY fun!!!!!!!

Just who is Bill trying to sue?  Isn't it okay to sue pirates that are violating copyrights?  There are no cases I've seen where MS has sued an end user for putting Linux on their Xbox.  It'll void your warranty faster than you can say it which has some people upset, but no lawsuit will come.

Funny thing is, you say you're sticking it to Bill, yet you buy games.  So he's making money off of you, and you don't even consider it.  Xbox live subscription?  Lots of profit in there also.

Actually, Matt, all the internal components in the X-Box ARE Amithlon compatible, provided you have the right drivers.

@JGolden

Make sure you use the new kernel, though, 'cos it's a GeForce3 chipset. Bernie didn't add support for that card, until the second kernel. What I would recommend is to get the NEWER kernel here:

Gary's Amithlon Page

It has a few more chipset drivers and it's pretty stable. I've been running it without error on my new GeForce FX 5200. It's a decent kernel. Best of luck with that.
