A600 to ADSL on IRC
« on: March 29, 2004, 05:40:23 AM »
I'm going to buy an A600 (beause they look small and cool), a PCMCIA ethernet card, and hook it up to my ADSL router and run an IRC client I made! It's going to be really cool. Really really cool. :)

Hopefully the A600 I'm bidding on has 2mb chip.. otherwise my plan wont work. hehe. Miami will use up 1.3mb RAM aproximately, and my client will use around 410k .. so it will be tight. Probably wont have wb loaded. Just two shells, miami, and my client. Did I mention its going to be cool?

I'm going to buy a reaaaaally long ethernet cable so I can stick the computer anywhere in my flat.

My ADSL is 256k .. I wonder how fast the A600 will be able to handle that sort of speed. haha :) I remember it dying on anything above 19200 baud using the serial port. Still, dont need much speed for IRC. :)

[17:36] thinking about how well my a600 will cope with 256k adsl makes me lol
[17:36] hrmm??!
[17:36] it will do just fine
[17:36] really? hahaha funny.
[17:36] 7mhz power.
[17:36] with ethernet it will max that out easy
[17:36] hell, via parallel port you could double that
[17:36] I've flowed 50K/sec via parallel port
[17:37] 256kbit = 32K
[17:37] so that's nuddin

Check out these system requirements for ADSL in New Zealand:

http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,3900,200386-201340,00.html

Set-up requirements

Check your computer has the following capability to ensure you get optimum performance from JetStream.

Requirement    IBM compatible    Apple Macintosh
Processor    Pentium 166 or better    Power Macintosh
Operating system    Windows 95+ or Windows NT3+    System 7.5 or higher
RAM    32 MB    32 MB
Free space on hard drive    30 MB    30 MB
CD-Rom drive    Required    Required

...

I cant wait to tell people I'm using 256k ADSL on a 7mhz computer with 2mb ram and a 40mb hd.. haha :)

How are you going to use it?  Most IP stacks take a fair amount of memory, not to mention the Ethernet driver.  I guess AmiTCP wouldn't have much of a footprint, but what about the apps?  Forget any gui programs, browsers, ftp clients, etc.

I always wondered how to get a 2M A600 online via Ethernet but thought it would take an OS so stripped that it would become useless.

Edit:  Duh.  Didn't see your first post, only the second.  :)  Let us know how it goes.  BTW, I woudlnt' use Miami.  Miami requires MUI which will add to memory use.  Use good old AmiTCP.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

my client uses MUI, so its no big deal. anyway, miami looks quite simple to setup. btw, it can use different GUI modules too it seems.. MUI will do fine though. :)

Once you have Miami configured, you don't need to load it's GUI.

@jahc:

I used to use my A600 with OS 2.x and 2Mb memory with Miami and a dialup modem.  AmIRC 1.41 worked fine with it, and you could browse the web (text only) using an early version of Amosaic.

By the way, it appears you still owe me the cash for the A3000D I did you an excellent deal on and kindly sent without prior payment so you could get it in time for Christmas 2003.

Can you kindly do the transfer to my bank account, or send me a receipt if you've already done it?
There's no payments showing up on any of my statements.

Thanks,
Anthony.

I've used my A600 with 2MB chip to connect the Net ;-)
Software I used:
-Workbench 2.1
-AmiTCP
-magPLIP
-Grapevine (IRC client)
-Telnet (part of the AmiTCP) to do remote browsing (using a shell account, and lynx).

It can reach the max speed (50KB/sec) with ease.

You've confused me with someone else. My name is James Carroll, and I did buy an A3000 off you.. but this was way before christmas, I just checked my internet banking (I love internet banking) and the payment went through on the 19th:

19 November            Anthony Ho
FN BILL TO NO 04         $100.00

I havent had a job since 2001, and I got paid weekly not fortnightly back then even.. so it really sounds like you think I'm someone else. Also the style of that email doesnt look like me.. I always use capital I's... I dont know what else to tell you really.. I hope this clears the situation up?

Hi James,
Sorry you're right.  I did sell you an A3000, but sold one around the same time to someone else in Auckland who keeps promising to pay but never does :/

I certainly did receive your payment, thanks.

BTW, I saw your add on Amibench.  Don't have an A600 I want to sell, but do have a spare A1200/030  if you have a need.

Talk to Jeff K in North Shore who might have a spare A600.

Jeff K, okay... he tends to want steep prices for his Amiga stuff though.. but I'll try him. :)

Good stuff.  The A601 is what you need for the additional 1Mb memory.  If possible get one with the optional real time clock.

I probably have stuff from my old 2Mb A600 setup on CD somewhere.  Like an early Amosaic and IRC client.

Give me a yell if you need anything and I'll dig them out.

I didnt realise my A600 didnt have a clock.. damn.

Thanks for the software offer, but I'm going to use an IRC client I've made. :)

I was a bit crazy about getting a nice white looking A600. I ended up getting a pretty yellow one, but I still really like it. I dont know why. I think the yellow gives it some character.. its weird.

@everyone

Anyone know what the RAM requirements of Amitcp are? And how easy it is to setup with cnet.device and an ADSL router? My IRC client uses MUI, so Miami using MUI is not an issue. If I can save even 100k with Amitcp, that would be quite good.

Update:

I brought another A600 with 2mb ram. It's nice and white. Was just missing a hard drive. So I took the one out of my first A600 and stuck it in the new one. Bodie sent me a PCMCIA ethernet card for free, which was really good of him. I got Miami working with cnet device with no problems at all, and am now running my home made IRC client WookieChat on my ADSL! Just need to buy another ethernet cable for my A1, which I borrowed. Then I can have all three computers online and switch between them when I get bored. Phoar!

The new A600 had the plastic end bit of a hard drive cable still connected to the IDE connector for some reason. I managed to pull it off with pliers.. bent 4 pins in the process, but was able to bend them back alright. hehe :) Was quite relieved that it actually worked. It looked pretty dodgy eh.

Now I just need to buy a stupidly long ethernet cable so I can stick the A600 somewhere cool. I havent decided where yet.
