BBS terminal programs - amtelnet & dctelnet
« on: October 31, 2025, 09:58:53 AM »
Hi all, I've been setting up winuae to connect to the internet, emulating a1200 using winuae's bsd.socket library.
iBrowse works so that's all ok.. but I have a couple of questions about the telnet clients dctelnet and amtelnet..

With dctelnet, I can apparently connect, but don't get any response from BBSs (and I know they're up because they work from host computer) .. oddly, just after it's made the connection the mouse starts really lagging. If I hit Disconnect, the mouse returns to normal..

So I tried Amtelnet and I like the look of it better, but it's got a 15 minute timeout and the registration site vapor.com is gone to domain squatters.

Does anyone know how I can get a reg code for amtelnet or contact the developer?

Or any ideas about the issues with dctelnet?

thanks

I've been playing around with this a bit more and found that if I went back to dctelnet v1.5, that worked better.
It still seems to get confused sometimes and stop responding or transferring data, and then the mouse lags. But it works more often than not.

Also just tried Term 4.8, as linked in the description of this aBSINTHE video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYVnyjAij8U

It won't connect at all, as it's looking for an actual modem. Telser is needed, but I can't figure out if it's possible to install Telser with Winuae's built in bsdsocket.library.

Does anyone else use Telser via emulation? Is there a trick, or should I switch from builtin bsdsocket to AmiTCP?

Any advice appreciated. :) thanks

@iDLe

Hi, don't know if this might help, but if you check aminet.net/comms, there's lots of BBS software on there.

Also, check out sysops-finest.org for BBSes

Thanks @OldAmigan

I hadn't heard of that forum before, but having a look it seems exclusively for sysops hosting BBSs, not for users trying to connect, but I'll have a deeper dig around.

And yeah, Aminet is where I'm getting most of the programs from (the one I got from the video of aBSINTHE BBS being the exception, but it looks like he had the exact same version available on Aminet) ..

As far as I can see, DCTelnet, Amtelnet, and Term are the most referenced as good for ANSI capable BBSing, but if there are other options, I'd love to know about them and try them out too.

cheers :)
