Upgrading a Blizzard PPC 68040 to an 68060.

Hi.  I'm new here.  But if the message board is anything like all the other webboards I've seen, then this question has probably already been asked a dozen times, and probably pops up again every few months.  Sorry about that, but....

I'm thinking about picking up a second hand Blizzard 240Mhz PPC with the 25Mhz 68040 and onboard SCSI.

My questions are this:  Can the 040 be swapped for an 060?  That's a Pin Grid Array chip, isn't it?  Would it be a direct swap?  Or would there be some extra hoops to jump through?  Would I need different software?  Anything?

I know an 040 is nothing to sneeze at, but I always wanted the full ride, you know?  It's just that the price is right.

Also, I read (on this webboard) that the Blizzard with the 040 will greatly benefit with the addition of extra power to the motherboard by way of the floppy drive power connection.

Can anybody tell me EXACTLY what I'm looking for on my motherboard, and EXACTLY how I would hook an additional power source to it?  I do not want to kill my machine.

Well, the 040 is most likely directly soldered to the card rather than socketed. That's your first problem.

Your second one is that the 68060 uses 3.3v as opposed to the 040's 5v supply. So this means you need to handle voltage conversion too.

It's not impossible I'm sure, but I don't know of anybody who has done it personally.

That said, it is something you can probably "have done" by a professional.

And his third problem, 040 firmware has to be flashed over to the 060 firmware, and I doubt that this can be done anywhere else other than @ DCE, because you can't just flash 060 firmware while still using the 040 or after you upgrade to 060.

the cyberstorm had the voltage regulator on board, all you needed to do to change from and 040 to 060, was move some jumpers around. (required soldering). not sure if its the same for the blizzard PPC...

Hi Dudes

Well, the only problem actually is to remove the 040 soldered on board in order to replace with the flashesly 060.

You MUST upgrade to 060 firmware version (downlodeable form DCE site), BEFORE do nothing. (yeah it can be done)

Then just have to change a logic jumper in the board, nearly the 040, to put the voltage regulator in 3.3v mode and, of course, retire the old 68k oscilator and put a new one woth the correct oscilation phase wave.

Youre done.

Sadly the {bleep}ed 040 comes soldered and, it may be tricky to unsolder it without damagin the PCB, because I "suspect" the pins of the CPU comes soldered by both sides of the pcb, and not only for the underside.

Its definately possible, but the unsolder the 040 and the lack of a 060 socket to prevent solder the 060, have made drop the idea.

The jumper is the leftmost of the 5 resistors bottom of this pic? (That's from BPPC with 060, so if 040 has the jumper in the other position that should be it. The other 4 resistors are the PPC PLL multiplier)

EDIT: Apparently this is not the jumper. If someone has a clue what this one (the leftmost) is, post a reply.

Yeah, but how to solder the inner legs of the 060 to the 040 legs remaining in the board? I can solder the inner legs and the outtermost legs, but no the rest!

No, at the side of the 68k (the side opposite to the reference numbers on the 040) there are some electronics
... Capacitor, 0 Ohm resistence and Capacitor, in this order from the resistors of your pic.

Than BIG resistence is what have to change (move to the other position)
