A2000 GVP A200-8 HC+ issue
« on: December 05, 2024, 08:24:40 PM »
Hi

i have buyed a venerable A2000 rev6with

A2088 bridgeboard
GVP A2000-8 HC+, with 8Mb fast onboard but 6Mb used because of A2088
Quantum HD 52Mb SCSI

The HD have died topday, predictable, but borring, so i have replaced it with a SCA seagate 600Mb pulled from a Sun SS5 for parts

I have install WB1.3 and mopre, but when i switch on the A2000, the HD led blink for a while before HD spinup, and still blink some second before booting

The HD SCSI50 to sca adapter have the Id set to1, other jumpers options are
LED
SYN
DLY
WTR

The GVP board SCSI id is to 1 too, maybe the issue ??

Cheers

Laurent

If I recall correctly, GVP SCSI cards/boards defaulted to SCSI ID 7 and some of their early boards required the first HD to be set to SCSI ID 0. Do you have a copy of the user manual? Maybe head over to amiga.resource.cx and grab one, if not.

I have almost the same set up on my 2000, recently I tried to put in a new drive after my docs drive failed after 32 years of service. The plan, simply put in a big drive  with its ultra scsi to 50pin adaptor in and copy off the original 50mb drive with my os and important stuff, then archive the old Seagate. No matter what setting I use the GVP card refuses to see it.  I suspect with mine its the firmware on my GVP card, as it also has isdues using a zulu card. I have decided to try the 4.15 bios and see if that helps.

How big is your "big" drive? IIRC there was/is a limit of 4GB (partitions) for HDs.

SCA80 interface is designed for wide-ultra (or ultra-wide) drives, ie 16bit.
The Amiga SCSI HBAs are almost all 8bit- the exceptions of the WarpEngine and Cyberstorm PPC, that I know of.

Any narrow-wide adaptor requires the high byte to be terminated. UW SCSI also requires the chain is active terminated, and ideally the last device supplies TERM power. You many also need to short the DLY jumper.
Ideally, use the jumper pads on the device itself rather than on an adapter.

I never had any issues with UW drives (HD68pin or 80pin SCA interfaces) on a narrow controller such as that on the GVP G-Force030/33.

edit: is this the only device on the chain?
edit2:   some scsi info - which I wrote 18 years ago??!!! Time flies!
