A1200 - buggy graphics in some games
« on: November 15, 2024, 02:05:57 PM »
Hi all,

I am seeing buggy graphics in some games and software.  I have just run Amiga Test Kit on my A1200 and it has raised the following attached issues.  From this I am wondering if my Amiga has a memory chip problem.

It has a Pistorm 32 lite installed but I had the same issues before installing this with the graphics.

Some software runs fine, ie. Word Processesors, X Copy.

Any guidance or advice welcome.

Regards
Steven

A1200, doesnt have slow ram. It just has 2MB Chip.
So I would expect to see 0MB for both Fast and Slow.

How are you runing this software / games. Workbench?
What Rom are you using?

In most cases I am loading via floppy drive.  I bought some updated Kickstart 3.2.2 roms from Sordan on Ebay as I thought this would solve the problem but still it persists.  Previously I was running 3.0.

Does this help?

Need more info, what are exact issues.
As it could just be it wasnt ment to run on AGA / newer roms, hence issues.

What happens if you go into Early Startup and disable caches. Then try again.

I take it your trying all this without  PiSTORM32?

What games are you seeing the glitches with, and can you describe the glitches or post pics of examples? Thanks.

Sorry OP, I had to split the topic, as it was out of control.

The correct operation for PiSTORM, is https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=76907.msg861463#msg861463

I see the issue with buggy sprites in Lasersquad and also in Rick Dangerous.  I do also have an A600, for which I do know Rick Dangerous runs fine on the A600.  I guess it could be an issue specific to running early software on the A1200.

No problem with splitting the concern.

Excuse my ignorance but how do I disable cache?  Is this in startup? (both mouse buttons).

Is this now a bare kickstart 3.0 A1200 booting from floppy, or is this with PiStorm32, Emu68, lots of ram, kickstart 3.2 and WHDload?

It has a Pistorm 32 lite installed but I had the same issues before installing this with the graphics.

Steven,

please give some more details:
1. Does the same issue happen without PiStorm32lite?
2. If it happens with PiStorm32lite only, are you using vanilla OS or have you decided to go for some pre-made distribution (AmiKit, Caffeine, something else)?
3. How does the config.txt file on PiStorms FAT partition look like?
4. How does the cmdline.txt file on PiStorms FAT partition look like?
5. Have you tried to run DiagROM with your amiga? Did it went well?

As I wrote there (https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=76907.msg861463#msg861463) the issues with loading games or demos directly from floppy on Pistorm32lite (and also on other very fast accelerators) can lead to several issues with caches, self-modifying code or too fast execution. Therefore it is advisable to run such things through WHDLoad which takes care of several settings for you.

As myself and others have asked, are these tests being done without the Pi. As if your having same issue, then it is not likely to be anything related to PiSTORM.
An example of a 500 floppy game that glitches on an A1200, is Dune (the original adventure).

You need do some tests with no Pistorm connected and then with it connected. Mschulz is correct though, best way to run games, is via WHDLoad (+WHDLoad wrapper).
If your able to get stuff running fine via vanilla setup, you could try what was mentioned. Adding a disable function, so your able to disable PiSTORM without removing it.

I know its a lot of information to take in and can get confusing.
