Creating a working hdf
« on: November 14, 2024, 10:11:14 AM »
I was kind of frustrated over this myself, constantly failing to get a working hdf file for use in A600GS.
Any new hdf I created gave me errors, like 'Not a DOS disk in drive HD0'
Older hdf's I had lying around did work, so I could reuse them, but being limited to one HDD only I wanted a bigger drive.
Turned out it was caused by the system I used in WinUAE to format the new drive that caused this. Both my Amikit and my old A4000 winuae setup are based on OS3.9 and after formatting the disk there simply didnt work even if I selcted FFS as the filesystem when formatting.

Setting up  a WB3.1 environment in WinUAE and then I was able to format a 2 GB hdf file and now got it working in A600GS :)

I transfered OS3.9 from my A1200/030 some time ago and had no issues formatting and using the HDF ... but I used FS-UAE on my Mac, shouldn't make a difference I think :)

Looks like I was celebrating to soon. I got that 2GB hdf working at first, as a WB3.1 setup. But a closer look into it show that under AmiBerry it reports disk space as 1GB.
And when copying the 3.9 workbench stuff into the hdf (in WinUAE) and use A600GS it will again say its not a DOS disk in device HD0.

Did you get any hdf's bigger than 1GB to work?

I have a 1.8GB OS3.22 working, created in Winuae then added latest roms and added the hdf as a 1200 using JIT and 8GB Ram
The free space shows as 1.8GB I just wish that I could have 2 drives System and Work

For the hdf, you created it in WinUAE as 1800MB? Then in what OS version was it formatted? Did you tick any options like FFS or International Mode, and did you use Quick Format or Full format?
Maybe not all these details should matter, but I just wat to try to replicate that as close as possible since it worked for you.
You transfer the hdf to A600GS using a USB stick? FAT32?

For OS3.2 I guess you use the 3.1 ROM and softkick it with loadmodule? My 3.2 (winuae) installation does not work with ROM3.1. I guess this is because it was installed with using the 3.2 rom, so the loadmodules are not installed on my system.
I will try to set it up agaion with the 3.1 rom in WinUAE then.

Winuae latest version
Created hdf as 1800Mb did not select any file format options, left as default.
Loaded install 3.2 adf and reset
Could see the unknown drive icon and did a quick format, named as system.
Installed OS3.2 onto system
Used latest hot fix upgrade adf
Copied the hdf to a brand new usb (I didn’t format it so not sure if fat32 sorry, will check later)
I uploaded new 1200 Rom I think 47.111 to a600 GS and removed older versions
Added hdf as normal selecting a1200 with JIT and 8Mb fast Ram

USB was fat32

Did you install with 3.2 ROM? its not clear.

If your using 3.1 rom, you need to install as normal and it will setup all loadmodule stuff.
Using 3.2 Rom, it should just ignore all the loadmodule stuff as its already there. Due to updated Rom.

You could split it into 2 partitions, System and Work.

I tried that with OS3.9/Kick 3.1 ... works on FS-UAE but only gives me a red screen at boot up on the A600GS :(

I used 3.2 Rom
Every time I split and create 2 partitions I get a red flashing screen and fails to boot on a600 GS even though it works in Winuae

Have you tried rdb and no rdb?
As some emulators, do not like RDB and like no RDB and vise versa.

Sorry, accidently edited your post.

Huh ? You cannot partition an HDF without RDB since the Partitioning Data and Filesystem Info is stored there ...

//EDIT : and I tested my 2GB HDF (2 Partitions with OS3.9 boot partition) on WinUAE/FS-UAE and Amiberry and it´s working fine, still getting the red flashing screen on A600GS  :-\

When trying to partition an HDF without RDB mode it won´t even show up in the HDToolBox for partitioning ...

So far every attempt that I have tried to upload an hdf file that is partitioned has failed. The only time that I can see the partitions is if I remove all roms other than the default aros ones and then the 2 partitions are visible on a workbench screen but are unusable. The single hdf does not show in the Hardfile table as 2 partitions like the amibench setup does.
I hope that this makes sense to someone.

To the ones which succeeded getting an OS 3.2.2 HDF running on their A600GS:

Could you please share your A600GS settings for your OS3.2.2 HDF? I can't seem to get this right...

Which ROM do you use in Manage ROMs for Model A1200? Which other ROMs are on your A600GS?

Which Amiberry/WinUAE did you use to create the OS3.2 HDF? Dir you modify the OS3.2 startup-sequence on Amiberry/WinUAE before copying the HDF over to the A600GS?

On my part I only do know that copying my working Amiberry OS3.2 to the A600GS does not work...  :'(  I get a Guru or red screen when I try to boot it with various settings on the A600GS.
