A couple of questions regarding running ADoom in AmiBench
« on: November 11, 2024, 12:26:45 PM »
I installed ADoom in AmiBench yesterday, and got it up and running. Looks very nice at 640x480.
Mouse control is a bit iffy, but it's serviceable at least.

I have a couple of questions for anyone else who has tried ADoom on the A600GS.

First is regarding the .doomrc file. It appears the keyboard controls are configured using some sort of ASCII values for the keys, and the readme says to consult UserHints.txt for information about configuring the keyboard. But the UserHints file doesn't have any information, other than for Right Alt, about what the ASCII key values actually are!

I tried searching online for the ASCII key values, and was able to find multiple resources that list the RAW key values, but I could not find any information about ASCII key values.

Does anyone have a list of what the ASCII key values are or can point me to a website that shows this?

Second regards the music. Again, the readme states to get ADoom_Instr.lha from Aminet and extract it to the ADoom program directory, and also to get the doomsound.library file and put it in LIBS:. I have done both of these and put them in the correct places, but no matter what, the startup text always shows

I_InitSound:  Cannot open doomsound.library, music not available.

I have tried two different MIDI_Instruments files, at https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/ADoom_Instr and https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/ADoom_Ins, and also two different doomsound libraries, at https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/DoomSndLibs and https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/DoomSndLibs372, and I have tried running the game through the doomsound.library icons in the ADoom folder, but none of them appear to be working, it always comes up with the "Cannot open doomsound.library" error.

Does the music actually work in ADoom on the A600GS, and if so, how exactly do I configure it?

You have to use a new version of doomsound.library -> https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/DoomSndLibs

That one inside the ADoom LHA does not work anymore :)

//EDIT : oh, and of course you have to start it with "ADoom -music" after putting the lib in it´s place ...

This one is difficult, you will need the ASCII Key scan codes in decimal values ... but even if you refer to something like https://www.torsten-horn.de/techdocs/ascii.htm the codes for the normal keys like WASD is ok but the values for the cursor keys are not those in the list ...

I found a little workaround, just download https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/DoomAttack-AIO and use the DoomAttackPrefs program to set your keys, save it and copy the created .DOOMRC over to the ADoom dir :)

But be sure to NOT do this in AmiBench since DoomAttackPrefs will crash on saving ;)

Thanks for your reply Skulleater.

With regards to the music, the soomsound.library you linked to was one of the ones I tried. I put it in LIBS: as per the ADoom readme, as well as the MIDI-instruments in the ADoom program directory.
And I have already set the MUSIC tooltype in the ADoom icon info.
And yet it doesn't work, I still get the error when starting up "I_InitSound:  Cannot open doomsound.library, music not available."

I think I'll try setting it up in UAE first, to see if I can get it working there.
Confused as to why it doesn't work on my A600....

And thanks for the ASCII keys link and the DpomAttack package link. I'll take a look at that (in UAE) too.

So I tried installing ADoom in UAE, after unarchiving the ADoom archive, I downloaded the Doomsound.library archive that Skulleater linked to above and unarchived it to LIBS: and the doom-instr to the ADoom directory. Upon starting with
ADoom -music
it work perfectly with all the music.

So I removed my ADoom from the A600GS and started again, did the EXACT same procedure as above with the exact same archives and it still doesn't work. No music, just SFX only.
Check the images I included below to see where everything was installed to and the command shell when starting the game.

So it would appear to me that the music won't work on the A600GS. Such a pity, as the music really adds extra atmosphere to the game.

If anyone can get it to work, please tell me exactly what you did, step by step, as I would love to know if anyone can get the music to work (and how).

Well it works for me and I did exactly what you did  ???

You can try to delete the doomsound.library in your ADoom dir and put the V38 inside there too if that makes any difference ...

These are the packs I used :
https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/ADoom-1.4
https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/DoomSndLibs
https://aminet.net/package/game/shoot/ADoom_Instr

Just got some time to try sorting this music business out, and in the end I did as you suggested and deleted the doomsound.library files in the adoom directory, and the music now works!

I also did a quick edit of the doomrc file using the ASCII key links you provided, just to get the good old WASD going for forward/backward and strafe, and that worked a treat too.
Will have to look into that DoomAttack program you linked soon.

Thanks for your help Skulleater. Now I can play Doom as the people who ported it to the Amiga intended. Into the depths of hell I go....

AmigaOS first looks into PROGDIR:Libs and then SYS:Libs for the Libraries.
So you can keep the Libs, which are only used by the program itself in PROGDIR:Libs
Libraries, which are used by different programs have to be copied to SYS:Libs, to be available for all programs.

Mouse control is a bit iffy, but it's serviceable at least.
There is a sensitivity adjustment, are there any other mouse settings?
I found that often in ADoom the mouse works in the beginning but then starts to constantly pull to one direction.
(thgis apears to be a general ADoom issue, not only in AmiBench)

@amyren: I found the mouse constantly pulling in one direction problem too, ie I move it left or right or forward and it constantly goes in that direction until I move it in another direction, then it constantly goes in that direction ... and so on... for me it happened without fail every time I enabled the mouse.

However, I found that enabling the JOYPAD option as well as MOUSE actually solves this problem somehow and the mouse works as normal.
Now if I could only find a way to stop the forward movement of the mouse actually moving me forward (so only the direction keys move me forward)...
