AmiBench questions
« on: July 28, 2024, 08:53:49 AM »
Just starting to use AmiBench on the A600GS and have come across a couple of issues.  I haven't changed any software or settings; this is the vanilla install that comes with the machine, other than I have updated to version 46.1.776.

1. If you right-click on a LHA archive, you get the option to "Unpack to...", but selecting it does nothing?

2. If you right-click on an USB Drive and select "Eject", an AmiBench Output Windows appears with "PARK: object not found".

(Anyone can feel free to use this thread for other AmiBench questions to save spamming the forum.)

1. I didn't know about that menu option, but lha isn't preinstalled, I've added it - just download and install it yourself.

2. Yes I've seen that myself with trying to eject disks, I believe it's probably a known issue that will be fixed in an update.

Hello

I have sent an email to Sven Ottemann to see if we can include it pre-installed.  In the meantime his website is here:  http://lha.a1k.org

I noticed Amibench said the name of its workbench the other day, it came up when it could not do something in it, can't remember what it was anyway it said... `Wanderer` and Wanderer is AROS so is Amibench AROS then or a customised version of it or its base is AROS, well it would not be Workbench would it, that copyrighted by Cloanto(Amiga Corp(that makes me laugh(I will not say what I think about that now).
I used AROS along time ago, maybe 10 years or so ago so it was not great then do not know what its like now, never used it since, well I only really use Commodore-Amiga, inc Workbenches from 1.3 to 3.1 or Amiga SYS4 or ClassicWB, I only really like 68k Amigas.
I did buy this yesterday Amiga OS 4.1 FE(it was only £26 for its iso from there website, way easier to buy) so I could run it in WINUAE(Hardware is way to expense for me to get for it, that why users use emulators, the hardware get more expensive the older Amiga gets) and wanted to see what it was like, Amibench got me curious about it... :)
Amibench reminds me of AmigaSYS4, one of the best Workbenches out there and still is.
I like Amibench because it has a AmigaSYS4 feel to it, thats why I like it.

Unfortunately we did not use Wanderer because we had too many problems initially.   We found it was better to put the development time into the AmiBench project as an alternative.  It has worked out well.

We purchased the AmigaSYS rights from Dary some years ago.  After we became the owner, some of the ideas from AmigaSYS influenced AmiBench development.   This is probably why you spotted some similarities!

There seem to be a lot of stuff missing or not pre-installed. (no "ed" or "edit" or any other text-editor preinstalled?)
Luckely it's easy on Amiga to see what is missing.
SnoopDOS is pre-installed (it's in Sys:utilities)

Open SnoopDOS and then try to extract an LHA using the "right-click/unpack to" command.
It will tell you that this command tries to open "requestFile" - which can't be found.
-> download one of the many filerequesters (e.g. https://aminet.net/package/util/batch/RequestFileR3 ) and put it in your C folder.

Than SnoopDos will tell you it tries to open "Xadunfile" which can't be found.
-> download it from https://aminet.net/package/util/arc/xadmaster020 (install the package)

Done!

It would be nice to have a little more pre-installed goodies in AmiBench, but I guess it's still early days and things will improve.
(Did I hear something flying by of an AmigaSys release in September ?)
