A1200 Busboard problems
« on: March 17, 2004, 07:19:58 PM »
Hello, i recently got a A1200 machine in a Micronik tower and a Micronik busboard.

I am powering the machine over the floppy connector and the machine works (well, the insert disk screen comes up and i can get to the early bootup menu) the Blizzard 68030 board also shows it's blue lines on bootup, so i presume that one boots up to.

So i added the busboard and stuck some Zorro2 cards in it (a Picollo (in Z2 mode), a Xsurf and a SCSI board.

the chips on the Zorro boards get warm (well, only the Cirrus Logic chip noticably heats up) , but when i go to the early bootup menu and check for any expansion devices it only shows up one board (which is the Blizzard i strongly presume, because it goes away when i remove that)

There is a socket on the Micronik busboard (for some largeish DIL (??) IC, it's unfilled tough) .

Anyone got some idea's advice ?.....

Just a suggestion - insert the cards one by one.
Also, do you have any disks for the cards?
I like Amigas

Drivers for those Zorro cards aren't really a problem, the Picasso is supported by P96 and i have a disk with SANA drivers for the Xsurf

Powering the machine *only* through the floppy connector might be the problem. Both the connector and the floppy power cable you plugged into it are not build to sustain high loads (which might occur when you are running a Blizzard, a bus board and several Zorro cards).

I had stability problems with my BlizzardPPC setup for exactly that reason.

The Busboard should have AT-style power connectors. Better use these connectors to power the machine.

Okay, that's bad. Does the manual list the pinout of that connector? Maybe somebody on here knows it? It should be easy to build a custom adapter once you know the pinout.

Another solution would be to slaughter an old external A500/600/1200 PSU: just use the connector that plugs into the A1200 and some of the wire attached to it. Reroute this into the tower case and connect it to the wires of the original motherboard connecters of the AT PSU. This, together with the floppy power connector should solve any power load problems that might be present.

If you have a broken (or unused) external PSU, this might be the easiest way to check if your problems *are* indeed caused by power load.

1200 busboard,

The board needs power. The suggestions about the connector
pinouts should be used. I know, cause I use to sell the
Micronik Board. Have 3 here and the connectors.
Its an 8 pin connector that you can find in electronic
stores. I had to build mine myself although Elbox or
Eyetech may have an adapter.
When you use the floppy connector you are just powering
the motherboard. This connector powers all components.

Then how is it possible that the LED on the Xsurf burns, and the Cirrus Logic VGA chip gets warm ?

Okay i solved the powering problems by adapting a PSU for the external connector, now that's done it still wouldn't work, so i started to inspect the board itself a bit.

what turns out 3 sockets are empty, i found a picture of the original board on TBBoAH

the most left chip with the Sticker on it is missing (is this a UV-EPROM ?) and the 2 left most chips, 2 GAL's (are GAL's programmable logic chips, or am i mistaken ?)

is it possible to replace those chips, or are those extra or something ? :/
