The Joystick Thread - Which are your favourites?
« on: July 14, 2019, 02:55:39 PM »
I was wondering what kind of joystick(s) you are using when playing games on the Amiga?

Currently I use The Bug from Cheetah. It is a bit different than the more common joysticks, but I like the style of it. If you haven't seen it, it is formed like a bug, with a face. ;D Works best for shooters like Banshee, Project X and Deluxe Galaga in my opionion, but is nice for other genres too. Considering getting a Konix Navigator and a Speed King too, but time will show.

So, what are your favorurites? :)

I'm not sure why we remember joysticks so fondly to be honest. Sure the 6 button arcade style ones are great but the Amiga ones never improved upon the one-button Zip Stick / Competition Pro Joysticks in my view (they are 2-button if you count the button on the other side for left handers)!

The CD32 Competition Pro Pad beats all Amiga joysticks hands down IMHO.

Sure, a gamepad is great for some games, but you will certainly suck playing Summer Games with it. ;D

I can't comment in this thread because I use a Joypad. Having said that I do have a bag of old joysticks and one of them is one of those Zipstiks with the two yellow buttons. When I get around to it I might convert the right-hand button to a button 2.

Competition Pro

(I also have a USB version of the Competition Pro for PC / Raspberry Pi connectivity)

Atari CX40

Poorly designed internally, but a classic.

Well I'm not really a joystick guy, I prefer the TechnoPlus Swift joypads and have two of them. Fantastic control pads, aesthetically pleasing matching the Amiga system colours, comfortable to hold and of course has the all-important autofire button! and a Turbo button which I'm not sure is meant to do.

I've always found the Quickshot joysticks to be pretty good, having one on my old Amstrad CPC with the switch at the bottom which could be toggled for use with several systems of the day - Commodore, Atari, Sega etc.
I also like the QuickShot II Plus - which seems to be held in quite low regard by a lot of people but I have found it to be a decent enough stick.

I am probably in a minority here but I never really liked the Zipstick, and the Competition Pro? Meh.

Being a flight sim guy I prefer a Quickshot analogue one. Don't even remember what digital one I have cuz I don't use it that often.

It's the same as the Auto Fire switch but in button form like the usual fire button...it really comes in handy. Have a go on Mega Typhoon and you'll know what I mean. It's the Auto Fire switch which I have never used and I'm not quite sure what that is for!

The only way for me is the Greek stick, pacman/tomahawk.
Built like a tank, precise movement, satisfying microswitch sound.

I am probably in a minority here but I never really liked the Zipstick, and the Competition Pro? Meh.

Me neither, although the only joystick I have is the competition pro.  Got quite a few of them.  I find that they're too small and awkward to hold.  My hand starts to hurt after just a short time using them.  But, to be fair, I would not be considered a 'gamer' so my my hands/wrists are not joystick fit.

Aside from the competition pro joysticks I have some CD32 pads but I'm not a fan of these, either.  I'd go joystick before I went pad for most scenarios.

Now that looks like a nice joystick.  Does it have sucker pads? If not is it easy to hold? I like the fire button too.  It looks like a proper arcade style button.
