I'm sick of the reality shows
« on: March 12, 2004, 02:45:52 AM »
When will they end for crying out loud!  Everything from a midget bachelor to the fourth edition of "survivor".  My god there is absolutely NOTHING good on TV (even if sports of any kind are on).  I think I'm going to start watching soap operas, or for that matter, soap operas in a foriegn language.

Time to throw the TV out the window imho.

That's not a soap... that's good TV.  Only problem is, it comes in staticy at best and I refuse to pay for cable/sat.  It's just another industry giant leeching off the public when it could be a fraction of the cost.

I hear you, I can't stand it, all we hear about/see down under is bloody Australian/American Idol, grrrrr, plus the rest, I suppose reality TV would be good if the people in it were actually real, instead of the plastic dummies that they really are.

Yes.

Stuff "reality TV". Try reality instead. When TV is crap it doesn't deserve to be watched.

The sad thing is, I know the Bachelorette personally (Scantlin, she grew up around here).  Why do people subject themselves to this sort of insta-fame/mockery/humiliation?  So far, every single half-arse act which comes from "#? Idol" is worthless.  I've heard some fantastic DJs (real ones, not the CD/digital mixers) who tried out for "#? Idol" only to be turned down in favor of a someone who can't come up with their own music if it killed them.  I think reality TV would be great if one of them started cussin up a storm and tearin after the producer wanting to "boot some head" or something similar.  I guess that's what makes the show COPS and "#?'s Most Wanted" so great.  To me, a reality show are things like the Croc Hunter or Emeril, not these "I hope my lack of acting is made up for by my stupidity".  I cannot wait until the informational age comes back... the time when people are sick of all this reality junk and turn to things like CNN/C-Span/60 Minutes/ or even 20/20 (ie, the real reality, not some made up junk to hope for ratings).

Unlikely, given the fact that ratings are the life's blood for commercial TV-stations. The sad truth is that people are in fact snobs. They claim to watch informational and cultural programs, while  they'd rather see Survivor. Or the not-quite-full-nudity sex of Big Brother-look alikes. I used my TV to watch Discovery Channel, and while it was available, Cartoon Network. Now, I just surf the Net, or cuddle with the GF. I'm seriously considering getting rid of the thing.
Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well.

i'm happy to say I've NEVER watched reality TV.
and I have plenty of stuff to watch.
lots of funny stuff on BBCAmerica. (Father Ted just kills me! :roflmao: ), I love the mystery/crime dramas they have, too.

I can get TechTV if there's nothing else i feel like, The Simpsons, Sinfield, sometimes the History channel, Science channel, esp if they have old Egypian stuff on. (digging up dead people), Monk, and the Food channel.

If the gov doesn't completely take away our rights, I'll still be able to watch this stuff. But it's not looking good for democracy.

OT: I've never quite understood Sinfield or found it funny. Frasiers pomposity I can just about hack, and his father is the best character in it imho, it's still not one of the best things to come out of the USA though.

*edit*
Back OT

I'm afraid I've indulged in the Big Brother shows that have been on in the UK, although as they've continued each year they've gradually deteriorated along the way. Poop Idol and all those haven't had a look in on my TV schedule however.

I've never watched any reality TV.

Sopranos, Law and Order, NYPD Blue, Seinfeld, MASH, Everybody loves Ramond, Curb your Enthusiasm, and the Simpsons are about the only things I ever watch anymore.

I've watched a few episodes of Law & Order, but whenever I hear the intro that starts:

"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crime ..."

It always finishes off in my head as:

"... and the criminals who commit it."
