Anyone upgrade CSA Derringer to 50Mhz?
« on: February 14, 2018, 12:17:48 AM »
I have a 68030 25Mhz CSA Derringer. I'd like to upgrade it to a 50 Mhz. Has anyone done this before?

It looks like I only need to swap the processor and change the oscillator to 100Mhz.

Looking for any advice or insight in accomplishing this upgrade.

Also has anyone done the 128 Meg upgrade?
If so how well has it worked?

i did the 128meg upgrade, works great. Metalguys instructions work perfectly.see here:

Mine was 50mhz already so i didnt have to do the cpu upgrade.a 50mhz cpu and 100mhz oscillator should get you there..see this picture:

I was thinking there are some jumper wire links that also need to be moved for 50mhz operation but i am not seeing them,so i must be thinking of something else.

good luck! you will love 50mhz and the gobs of ram.

Yeah, both of mine are already 50MHz... need to do that 128MB upgrade.

There might me more to this then just a 50MHz cpu and another oscillator. If I'm not mistaken, some components have different ratings. The Derringers that were delivered as 50MHz models had some faster components (gals?) on the board. On amiga.resource.cx is a good high res picture of the 50MHz version, but unfortunately not of the 25MHz version.

I want to say my first 50MHz one was actually upgraded.  It's in my 1000 in controlled storage.  Next time I'm out there I'll have a look at it.  If it was upgraded I'll take some pics.

Thanks. I'd appreciate any info. I'll look into the 128 MB upgrade for now and then deal with the processor switch later.

My fear is that there may be other significant logic changes on the board even though they are strikingly similar in layout.

I looked at it today. I have no indication it did not come as a 50MHz board.  It looks like I managed to snag two Derringers 50MHz from the manufacturer.

Thanks for double checking. I'll have to decide if I want to risk trying to upgrade it.

I just acquired one of these!
G-Force 030 @40MHz Impact A2000-030 Combo Series II card w/16MB ram

Anyone upgrade one of these 40MHz to 50MHz? I guess I would need a FULL 030 CPU though.

I have attempted to upgrade a 25MHz Derringer to 50MHz years ago but it didn't work well. The Derringer did boot with 68030 50MHz CPU and 100MHz oscillator but couldn't detect the memory module anymore. I tested several memory modules but no luck. I guess you either need upgraded GAL chips or delay the accesses to the memory slot.

I would consider twice (and then some) before upgrading GVP cards to 50MHz. Some seem to have broken the CPLD chips of their GVPs when they have upgraded their cards (at least from 25MHz to 50MHz).
