IDE4Zorro2 with GVP 030 Combo board
« on: January 27, 2018, 03:10:44 PM »
Has anyone successfully gotten the above working together in an A2000?

My IDE4Zorro2 worked just fine until I dropped the 030 board in and then it disappeared!  Tried disabling the autoboot ROM and set the jumper for no SCSI drive installed and it still doesn't want to boot from the IDE board.  It isn't even seen!

HELP!!!!

Just a couple guesses, try removing the ROM completely from the GVP and move the IDE card into a closer slot?

The IDE4ZORRO card is pure garbage.  I have one, and it doesn't work with several different cards I have in my two A2000s -- one even being an X-surf-100 card.  It doesn't comply to autoconfiguration guidelines, so, it essentially breaks autoconfig.  It emulates the GAYLE chip on an A600, and, from what I have been told by Matze on A1K, it works by sheer luck only.  Keep the SCSI and ditch the IDE card.  I feel like I wasted $120 on a POS card.

Same here.... it won't even work with a Zorro2 adapter hanging off an A500. And I really dislike those 3.5" IDE ports. :(

I should mention that the only way I've gotten it work in my A2K with Blizz 2060 inserted is to build an AmigaOS on a CF separately then plug the IDE4 Zorro 2 card into the A2K w/o SCSI HDD connected to the Blizz 2060. If a bootable CF card is plugged into my PCD-50B, the IDE4 Zorro 2 Card won't even show up in the early startup menu. Weird. I can't set up a boot priority. I haven't really went IN DEPTH with the whole thing though. Just did a lot of swapping the card around in a couple of Amigas.

Well nuts.  Guess we can add the GVP 030 Combo board to the list of non-compatibles!

Tried completely removing the autoboot ROM and it still wouldn't recognize the IDE board.

Moved the IDE controller to several other slots with no luck either.

Guess I'm back to adding SCSI drives and CD-ROM instead of IDE.

Phooey!  Was hoping to get to IDE so it'd be a bit easier to find drives if/when a drive dies.

Ya know, for a computer that's supposed to be easy to use, it sure isn't easy adding hardware, sometimes!

So, I'm trying to install the GVP SCSI.  Downloaded the appropriate driver (in dms format), ran the dms program I have (DMSWb) and all I ever get is NDOS disks!

As Capt. Dylan Hunt of Andromeda said, "It's never easy."

Now to amiftp to find a new dms program.

I just picked up an IDE4Zorro2.  Good to know about the Blizzard 2060 as that is where I plan to use it.

Thanks for the heads up on the Buddha ide card.  Had one of those WAY back when installed in an A500 with a Bodega Bay chassis.  Had a bit of trouble convincing it the CF cards were IDE, but finally got it working.  May look into that option.

@LoadWB
Well, your mileage may vary greatly... I didn't pull any of the other cards (in my sig - thx for the heads up kirk_m) out when trying to see the IDE4Zorro2 with HDToolBox or HDInstllTools - tried both. I had the A500 and the A2K setup at the same time as I was also trying to get my very finicky Buddha Phoenix edition tested to do ANYTHING on either setup. The Buddha works great with the Zorro2 adapter on the A500 (thank Ipthar 'cause I was ready to chuck it!) - no go on the A2K. The IDE4Zorro2 will work with a preinstalled OS in the A2K but refuses to work on the A500 at all.

I think I also tried an old 3.5" IDE HDD on the IDE4Zorro2 but don't remember how that went - gonna need some adapters so I can try some 2.5" IDE laptop drives.

I REALLY need a 3.1 ROM for my A500 & I really wish I had another bare-bones A2K! (anyone have either to sell?) Anyhoo, give it whirl & let us know how you make out with testing.

@Curtis
Did you try your IDE4Zorro2 with a preinstalled OS on the CF or do you not have that ability?

BTW, nice price on the new Buddha though! Also, it still has a clock port on it!

Wait till you guys see my new experiment with the Buddha card utilizing the clock port, TruIDE, a Subway USB controller, a Realtek USB ethernet dongle and a Netgear ethernet SAN box hanging off the Zorro2 adapter on my A500! :eek:

Well, put the Buddha card on order.

BTW, while I'm waiting for the Buddha card to make it across the "pond", does anyone have a GVP prep disk they'd be willing to make a copy of for me?  I've been trying to d/l the latest, but for some reason I can't seem to get a good write from any of my disk masher programs.  Always end up with an NDOS disk.  Would really like to have it for the Combo card, just in case...

Curtis,

Make sure you send Jens a message to flash your Buddha with the fixed firmware.  There are a lot of people, Acill and I included, whose cards don't work with anything other than the included Disk on Module.  I tried several IDE HDs and CDROMS, and it wouldn't even detect them.  Users over on A1K also have had the same experience.  There is a fix in the works, but, it requires sending the cards back to Germany to have him update the Xilinx chip for you.

AFAIR the "prep disk" doesn't include anything other than GVP's horribly outdated HD prep tools and a mem tester.  Can download better stuff off Aminet than what's on there.  ;)

just use wb3.1 hdtoolbox if that is what you are after, works with any gvp device pretty much. just be sure to change the scsi.device to gvpscsi.device in the tooltypes or whatever you are working with. as others have said,nothing you really need on a gvp floppy.
