I was trying to get Timberwolf so I downloaded it from os4depot.  I performed all the tasks in the timberwolf doc but everytime I would start Timberwolf, it would grim reaper.  So I gave up on it.

I was looking at what exactly a Grim Reaper "Type of crash: DSI (Data Storage Interrupt) exception" is.  Since I wrote another post about how my XE kept freezing until I installed a new Barracuda Hard Drive, I was wanting to know if it was related.  I came across this post.

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3031&p=33923&hilit=timberwolf+grim+reaper#p33923

This is from 2015 where a user found that the os4depot Timberwolf archive is the current version of 4.0.1.0252 but all the folders are missing.  The Aminet Timberwolf archive is complete but version 4.0.1.182.  So I did as the user of this post did and downloaded the Aminet version and it worked.  I also followed his lead and copied all the folders from the Aminet version into the OS4depot version and now that one works.

Can somebody fix the os4depot Timberwolf archive so it is complete and works?  Aminet needs to be updated with the current version as well.

Also can anybody tell me what a Grim Reaper "Type of crash: DSI (Data Storage Interrupt) is?  When the man with the sickle appears it is always of this type.

Timberwolf is so out of date I wouldnt even attempt to use it. The one that comes on the OS4.1FE disk works some, but still its a mess.

As far as DSI errors it has something to do with the disks being to fast or something I hear for the OS. You can ignore it. A lot of people get them in things other than Timberwolf. Its popped up for me a few times on my X5000 too. Much more since getting a SSD on it.

interesting, did not know that !

TBH Timberwolf is far from being usable on any Amiga-NG and the only somewhat usable browser at the moment is Odyssey.
So I am not going to install this beast which is not even working 100% and slow as hell (starting and rendering).

Timberwolf was awesome before OS4.1FE came out..I was using all my favourite add-ons with it with OS4.1 Update 6 with no problems but since FE came out it's basically useless now:( as an original bounty supporter I'm especially :(

Well.  I have an AmigaOne XE.  Once I figured out that the OS4depot archive is incomplete, I have the latest Timberwolf working on OS4.1FE.  Sure it is buggy but for all the basic browsing it works.  I do like Odessey better so far but I use both.

Why doesn't somebody fix the archive on OS4depot?

Back in the day, I use to hop between Ibrowse and Voyager.  Voyager was my favorite.

I read that they spent something like $15k to develop Timberwolf.  Why not use it, compile the errors and keep the project moving forward.  That seems like a huge waste of money if it is just dropped.  I think one reason is that the archive is incomplete and when people download it, it doesn't work.  It runs a little slow on my A1 XE.  I would like to see it on an X5000.

I do agree Odessey is faster and seems more stable.

The Timberwolf archive is complete. The problems is that the last version fails to create some essential index files on first run on certain machine/Filesystem combinations.
Thus someone updating would not have any problems. A fresh install will .
Unarc and copy the following files to your Timberwolf directory and give it a try

Spectre660,

The timberwolf archive on OS4depot is not complete as it is missing all the directories.  If you take and copy the directories from the Aminet dir to the os4depot version, it works.  If you don't believe me, download Timberwolf from Aminet and os4depot and compare them.  You will find that the .252 version on os4depot is missing all the folders.

The os4depot version was uploaded by one of the authors .
The Aminet version was uploaded by a third party .
Anyway my method works for getting the os4depot version running .

FYI, I am currently responding to you on Timberwolf .252.  The OS4depot archive is still incomplete.  I have contacted Hans Frieden.  I have talked to him in the past troubleshooting Timberwolf.

I think it is really bad to say "The problems is that the last version fails to create some essential index files on first run on certain machine/Filesystem combinations." when a user brings an obvious problem to the board and nobody really seems to care.

I have an A1XE 800Mhz the oldest and slowest NG Amiga and I have it running fine.  Now that I have my A1 running solid, I am moving forward.  I would love to become a Beta tester if there is a slot open.

You posted that July 2014.  I have the archive from 2013 when I down loaded it and emails with Hans from then.  My download from 2013 is the exact same one that I recently downloaded missing the folders.  So nobody but this one guy from the Hyperion link actually looked into it and found that the folders were missing from the current version.  Sad.

Did you compare OS4depot to aminet?  Then once you see the folders are missing and copy them from the aminet archive to os4depot, it will work.  Everybody complains that the new .252 does not even work.  I have told you why and you continue to argue with me and try to defend yourself.  Move on and lets get the archive corrected.

Here is your archive you attached above from drop box and contains no files and not all folders:

25.RAM Disk:Timberwolf> dir
     searchplugins (dir)
     res (dir)
     plugins (dir)
     modules (dir)
     extensions (dir)
     dictionaries (dir)
     defaults (dir)
     components (dir)
     chrome (dir)

Here is my directory of my Timberwolf .252 that works:

25.System:Internet/Timberwolf> dir

     res (dir)
     plugins (dir)
     modules (dir)
     extensions (dir)

Comment by: Spectre660 (209.59.126.236)At: 30 Aug 2013, 15:51File version: 4.0.1.0252Fresh install wont work on AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6 with a Sam440ep-flex and Sam460ex.
Seems as if there is a problem creating  the files that are normally created at first run.
If these directories and files are copied from an old install then the new install will work

A security feature of os4depot prevents anyone except the original uploader from replacing files . a good thing indeed.

here are the differences in the archives.  As you can see the folders are missing from the os4depot:

aminet .182 archive:

7.RAM Disk:Timberwolf> dir
     searchplugins (dir)
     res (dir)
     plugins (dir)
     modules (dir)
     extensions (dir)
     dictionaries (dir)
     defaults (dir)
     CurrentUserProfile (dir)
     components (dir)
     chrome (dir)
  application.ini    blocklist.xml      chrome.manifest
  dependentlibs.list greprefs.js        libcairo.so
  libdl.so           libfontconfig.so   libfreebl3.so
  libmozalloc.so     libmozjs.so        libnspr4.so
  libnss3.so         libnssckbi.so      libnssdbm3.so
  libnssutil3.so     libpixman-1.so     libplc4.so
  libplds4.so        libpthread.so      libsmime3.so
  libsoftokn3.so     libsqlite3.so      libssl3.so
  libxml2.so         libxpcom.so        libxul.so
  nsinstall          platform.ini       ReadMe
  ReadMe.info        README.txt         run-mozilla.sh
  Timberwolf         timberwolf-bin     Timberwolf.info
  update.locale      updater            updater.ini
  xpcshell           xpt_dump           xpt_link

os4depot archive:

7.RAM Disk:Timberwolf-os4depot> dir
  application.ini    blocklist.xml      chrome.manifest
  dependentlibs.list greprefs.js        libcairo.so
  libdl.so           libfontconfig.so   libfreebl3.so
  libmozalloc.so     libmozjs.so        libnspr4.so
  libnss3.so         libnssckbi.so      libnssdbm3.so
  libnssutil3.so     libpixman-1.so     libplc4.so
  libplds4.so        libpthread.so      libsmime3.so
  libsoftokn3.so     libsqlite3.so      libssl3.so
  libxpcom.so        libxul.so          nsinstall
  platform.ini       ReadMe             ReadMe.info
  README.txt         run-mozilla.sh     Timberwolf
  timberwolf-bin     Timberwolf.info    update.locale
  updater            updater.ini        xpcshell
  xpt_dump           xpt_link

Somebody should fix the archive so it is all in one .lha.  I'm sure the admin or MOD of os4depot can do that.

Those darned DSI errors. They are the main reason, why i haven't switched completely to AOS4
