Amiga 3000 boot problem.
« on: January 15, 2018, 08:21:22 AM »
I have an A3000 (serial number 001205 -is it an old A3000?).
Until yesterday boots normally. From today does not boot and goes to a menu which I have to choose to boot from 1.3 disk or 2.0 disk.
The machine has 3.0 roms I think because has 3.0 Workbench.
Also can I use any SCSI hard drive in the A3000?

Need more info. What sort of device is it trying to boot from, have you tried a warm reset after giving the device time to spin up, etc.

BTW 3.0 ROM is not available for the A3000, only 3.1.

Sounds like your hard drive might've given up the ghost, although you should probably go through and check all the obvious stuff - connections, termination, cables, etc.  Any clicking or unusual noises from the drive?  Battery leakage on the motherboard that could've affected anything?  Lose your NVRAM settings that contain some boot information?  Does the drive show up in early startup?  Detect it from HDToolbox if you boot from floppy?  Etc.

If I understand correctly, from your previous post it sounds like you already have 3.1 ROM's installed?

Get the HDTools up and running on a floppy and see if you can get the disk recognised even if its not a DOS mount. Try validating the disk and saving any errors, that can kick a disk back into life. Leave the machine on, stand it on its side and leave running. Basically its stuck. I've even tapped mine. Interestingly I had a 2000 start playing up cus of the cold and today a 590 XT doing same. I never get too troubled by it as I just keep switching on, and running till warm and eventually will kick in.

Once working, copy the entire contents if you can and get another drive.

What happens if you select 2.0 from the menu. Does it kick anything. I have a 3000 with that menu and it fires up the hard drive.

Correct.  50-pin internal SCSI devices, or others with the proper adapter.  :)

Replacing the ROM isn't going to solve the problem of a dead hard drive.  ;)

Also there is no 2.1 ROM.  2.1 is a software-only update that works with the 2.04 ROM's.
