Amigaone XE locks up
« on: January 11, 2018, 08:09:23 PM »
I have had this system for about 8 years.  It was given to my by a guy I bought an amiga 4000T from who said he didn't know what it was and it won't boot.  I got looking at it and found it was an AmigaOne and log story short, I ended up removing the MB and reseating the CPU module.  It also seem to have the wrong standoff and the module was cocked.  So I installed the right height one.  However, it is a finicky thing and if I let it sit for a few months, I will have to reseat the CPU module.  It has been behaving lately.

Since I have owned it, It hasn't been stable.  It had 4.0 and I upgraded it to 4.1U6 and now FE.  I have seen several posts around the NET on this issue and I have tried many different things through the years.   I have read about DMA issues and so forth but I do not have any onboard devices running except the NIC.

Here is an inventory of my Amigaone.

A1XE-MBD7451 G4 @800MHz 1Gig RAM
ATI M9200 256MB PCI
EIDE SIIG SC-PE4B12-S4
Startech PCIUSB7
SB Live! 5.1 SB0220
PS/2 mouse and keyboard (AmigaONE)

I have the EIDE configured with HD on Primary and CD on Secondary channel.  They were both on Primary with HD as master and CD as slave.

I was running OS4.1U6 but just installed 4.1FE.  I experience from time to time the system just locks up.  I have the CPU docky running and it just pegs at 100%.  When it does if I reboot, it will lock up right before it plays the bootup sound and the mouse will be stuck in the left corner.  Sometimes the audio will start to play and it freezes to a digital buzz.  The only way I can get it to boot after that is turn the PS off for 30 seconds.  I have replaced the bios battery even a few cards.

I was reading a review on the X5000 and they said that the onboard audio is an issue and they give an external card.  Even though I am using a SB Live!, it is sure pointing to audio by the way it gets stuck when it boots.

I have not been able to pin point it to one thing or be able to recreate it.  I can say that Timberwolf will crash it every time.

Not many choices since all the TerraTec seem to be discontinued.  Since the SB Live 5.1 is noted for locking up the A1 I found an older SB 128 PCI CT4750 that I have based off the EMU10k1-JFF chip.  I put it in and the A1 boots and I have audio.  So far so good.  It sounds a bit tinny.  I just want it solid where it doesn't lock up.

Anybody have a card they would recommend?  I looked on IntuitionBase and I can't find a card available :(

@cehofer

i've always had success with envy24ht-based cards like the ESI juli@. there's a m-audio revolution 7.1 card available on ebay right now for $30 that is known to work well, too.

Have you checked to see if the onboard sound chip is installed?

No.  I have not looked at the audio on board chip.  It initially came with the sb live!  I ordered that Revolution 7.1 on ebay.

I have an update to it locking up.  Even after I changed the audio card from the SB Live! to the SB128, it still locked up on me.  I was downloading on iBrowse and I got a r/w error on my HD.  The HD is a Maxtor 60G ATA133 and the one it came with.  I have a few 160Gb Barracuda drives so I started from scratch loading 4.1FE on it.  It took me a few minutes to figure out how to install the slbv2 file on the new HD.  After that I was up and running.  First off, I noticed a huge speed improvement just on installing 4.1FE and the enhancement 1.1 cd.

After I updated the system on the new Barracuda drive, I switched back and rebooted on the old Maxtor HD to back up my files to transfer them and it locked up a couple times on me where I had to shut of the PS and then start it back up.

I have been running it now for a couple days on the new HD and it has been solid.  I have only got a couple Grim Reapers but no hard lockups.  When I first got the machine, i installed a 40 pin IDE cable and split the CD off the Primary and moved it to the Secondary port but it made no difference in performance.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.  :)
