Janus problems
« on: December 31, 2002, 09:57:02 AM »
Trying to install Janus2.1 and I am running into several problems.

First when I try to make a virtual harddisk,   The installer program requests that I enter a number in mb between the values of 1 and -53 for the size of the disk.  the default is 10 and -53 = 32mb, the max allowed size apparently.  Well, the installer will not accept any of my numbers.  It just flashes at me when I try to enter a size.  It will not even let me abort the install. I have to reboot to get out of it.

well fine, I will just install without the virtual harddisk.  After the installer completes its business I get a message that says it cannot open janus.library. what gives?

Anyone have some idea what might be happening here?

that's quite strange, the installer works faultlessly in 5 computers I tested (A2000, A2040, A2060, A4040, A4060T)...
My Janus version is 36.83... it must be installed in sys:Expansion
you should have the command BindDrivers in your Startup-sequence, so the Janus.library will be loaded.
Try to boot without caches to see if the janus.library loads... the CPU caches sometimes give problems with bridgeboards.
Check that the board is recognized (you can do this with sysinfo for example, if the board appears, it will probably work)

sysinfo recognizes the board.

Binddrivers is in the Startup sequence before enforcer is loaded. It is not loaded in user_startup. I am not sure if that makes a difference.

janus.library is installed in sys:expansion

Do you boot from an ide or scsi drive?
have you tried to boot without caches?
do you use the same janus.library version?

I am using workbench3.1

Not sure how to turn off the cpu cache

just reboot with the two mouse buttons pressed, that should work.
There's a patch to make janus.library work with scsi drives (but I can not make it work), I think that as the janus.library isn't compatible with most of scsi controllers you won't make it work... I have a 4.3gb scsi and I have to boot from an IDE partition...
Janus.library does not get on well with DMA hd controllers...

I finally got the virtual drive to work, apparently the installer does not like large drive capacieties. I am still having problems getting janus.library to work. Crumb mentioned that scsi sometimes causes problems, could this be the case here? Where can I get that program that makes janus work with scsi?

Which Bridgeboard do you have? Janus version 2 is only compatible with the 386SX Bridgeboard. If you have the 286 you'll have problems. I have a 286 Bridgeboard and I acquired Janus 2 by downloading it from the internet somewhere.

It is an 2386sx bridgeboard runing at 20mhz. The 386 chip is an intel i386sx. Eight of the 16 memory banks are filled with zips, not sure how much ram is installed either 4mb or 8mb. how can I tell?

It says that it cannot open  janus.library.

I managed to get hte hardfile to work by setting it to a smaller hardrive partition.

One way to find out how much memory you have is watch the memory test (on the PC side) when it starts up. Do you have a manual? It would be very difficult to get this working without one. Is janus.library in your "expansion" drawer? You can also get this error if your board isn't installed right.

Janus.library is in my expansion drawer.
I am goint to try installing the board in another slot and see if that fixes things.

nope, still have the same problem. I guess its time to sit back and think about this some more.
