A3640, OS3.1 and OS3.9
« on: December 06, 2017, 03:13:32 AM »
I've gotten my A3000 up and running with a working RTC, LUNS support, and 16 MB of RAM.  I have an A3640 v3.2 and though I installed it earlier (before working out the RTC, LUNS, RAM issues), I do not have it installed now.

I have OS3.1 on a CF card and it's a quasi-hacked-up job as I encountered floppy disk/drive problems during the install.  I had to manually copy files from the various floppies to the CF card.

My ultimate goal is to run OS3.9 so I don't want to spend too much time with the OS3.1 install.  My question is should I get the A3640 to work on OS3.1 and then install OS3.9 or should I install OS3.9 first?  If the former, do I need install 68040.library in Libs and any others or will OS 3.1 work well enough for me to upgrade to OS3.9 without it?  What about OS3.9?  Does it install the 68040.library automatically if it "sees" a 68040?

When I did a fresh install on a new 4000D with a 3640 I had to do the 3.1 installation, first, then install 3.9.  I had a problem with the CD filesystem if I tried to install 3.9 directly.

Now, I was having problems installing 3.9 directly from an emergency boot floppy.  I cannot recall the error but I have a thread here which describes my pain.  I want to say I eventually got it to work by using a different CD, but I cannot recall.

I might try again over the weekend.  It does not take long at all.

nothing special to do with the 3640.
both 3.1 and 3.9 install the 68040.library, even if the card is not plugged in.

I would make an ERD floppy (tool is on the CD) then install 3.9 directly, followed by BB1, 2, 3, 4, then any additional patches or tools you require. Not to toot my own horn but there's plenty of videos on YouTube for installing 3.9.

Also I'd go with an alternate 68040 library besides the C= one, but that's just me. ;)

Is there a difference between an os3.9 install between an Amiga 2000 and a 3000?  I have a os3.9 CF I built for my 2000.  Will it work straight up in a 3000?

Maybe a few math libraries, device drivers and the like.  Also if you've done any additional customizing beyond the stock install.  I would say pop in the card and see, if it throws an error message in S-S just boot without S-S and tweak till it does work.

That's how I solve all my Amiga problems.  By beating my head up against them, line by line, until they do work.  ;)

Yes, I managed to get everything working last night on a freshly formatted CF... until I fried my VA2000 (hence my marketplace post).:angry::angry:

I had to manually copy the 68040.library file, but that was that was all that wasn't pretty standard.  Followed Mike's youtube video and it all went well (except for the fact that I too forgot to make the boot partition bootable.. but that was easily fixed in HDToolBox)

Oh my! :( Are the VA2000 boards even still available (I haven't looked lately)? Hope you get another one! I HEART RTG. :)

BTW, I keep multiple copies of my ERDs now for all machines.

Might try to get a cheap hot air reflow station, if I can find one, and see what damage I can do.  I think I need to replace eight smd level translators (5v to 3.3v) and make a wish that it works.  I was contemplating buying another VA2000 to put back into the A2000 that I've robbed from until this happened.. so maybe worth attempting a repair.
