Format Mac disk on Amiga system
« on: November 10, 2017, 07:44:31 PM »
Hi All, quick and dumb question, probably.  Is it possible to format Mac 800k disks on
Amiga 3.9 or 3.1?

Just asking,

Brad Hansen

So far as I am aware, the 800k Mac format is a double-sided version of the 400k which uses a variable spindle speed.  That being the case, no, it would not be possible to format on the Amiga.

No way, you will need a mac that have a real disk drive for this.

I've never used it, but even with CrossMAC it looks like you need additional hardware to use 800k Mac disks on an Amiga:

Maybe one of the other emulators will fair better?  Fusion, Shapeshifter, etc.?

I used CrossMac to write high density floppies on my A4000 (transferring files to my then new-to-me LC 475), don't think I ever tried writing 800K disks.

I have successfully used CrossMAC for high-density Mac floppy and Zip disks.  Anymore, though, you can accomplish the same tasks with PC-formatted 1.44MB disks (or FAT32-formatted USB drives if USB is an option.)

That's what I thought! I've been on Mac 68K brain overload for about a month as I recently bought a nearly brand new LC III 030 & had read that. @dovegrace / LoadWB, glad to know who's cross-trained! :)

Lol, yeah.  Long story.  Got called a conceited jerk back in '93, adopted it as my nickname shortly thereafter.

Good God if I adopted some of the things I've been called as handles I'd never be allowed in forums, maybe even on-line period.

If you have an Apple 800K external disk drive you can connect this direct to an A-MAXII cartridge plugged into an Amiga and write, read and format Macintosh disks.

A-MAXII manual...

800k format readable on a real Mac?

You can format a low density (i.e. 880k) floppy under Shapeshifter in a compatible format that a Macintosh can read and write. What you can't do is the opposite, i.e. read a low density floppy, formatted on a Mac, on Shapeshifter.

Shapeshifter runs on Workbench 3.0+, so you can do this both under 3.1 and 3.9.
