Amiga OS4.1 Classic on Blizzard PPC - installation freezes
« on: November 05, 2017, 04:10:58 AM »
I'm trying to install AmigaOS 4.1 on my newly acquired Blizzard PPC. Startup from floppy works fine until "AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition" screen and... stays there "forever". CD ROM spins and nothing.

Amiga is recapped, Mediator jumpers are as they should be (only Radeon attached), power supply is great and floppy cable attached to motherboard, Blizzard is made in Stachu so no issues here. FastATAV. Blizzard in boot menu configured as is should be (70ns etc.).

... any ideas?

You could remove all cards from the Mediator and try booting from the cd again, it boots in aga.

Check your install media for scratches, etc.  Try another drive?

CD is brand new, and I made ISO for PC and it works great. Without Radeon, I'm getting only black screen after reboot with colors flushing. CDROM just spins.

I did not have issues with this DVD drive at all, my OS3.9 is scratched as it can be and loads fine.

In general the same system has no issues (known issues!) in OS3.9.

loading forever is normal since everything has to be loaded from the CDROM so it DOES take a while.
the other thing I am thinking of is the monitor which is out of sync. I did not try AOS4.1FE but I installed AOS4.1 and all went well on my A1200PPC.

How long it takes? 10 minutes? 20 minutes? How long "AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition" screen stays on before getting to system setup?

Are you sure the PPC is working? That final edition screen is the first loading of the OS from the CD. Have you tried using the PPC test floppy that checks the PPC that Phase5 has made?

When I tried to use my Blizzard 030 I don't think it even loaded new kickstart and I never seen "Amiga OS 4.1" screen. It was quite a while ago.

I will test PPC, but I just ruing my OS3.9 and need to put it back from backup :).

I just run PowerUP test and it is OK. When I try to do WarpUP it wants to terminate ppc.library, but when I terminate it computer will reset, but I don't think this is a problem.

I just run SysSpeed and PowerPC test works fine (406MIPS :) ), I'm using JPG datatypes for PowerPC zero issues.

I have no idea what problem (this time!) it is. Under AmigaOS3.9 everything is rock solid.

@kreciu
How is the cdrom connected to the FastATA?
I believe the correct setup when installing is to have the harddrive connected to the primary port as master and the cdrom as slave, also on the primary port.
But it might be worth experimenting a little here.

This is why I gave up on 4.1 on my A4000T and just got an X5000 lol!

@Acill

Never, never give up on Amiga related stuff... ;). For me it is more about "making it work" (and I expressed this many times). I would be super surprised if my AmigaOS4.1 simply work. Impossible!

Not like we have a network driver, FPU etc. etc. in new Tabor that was announced about 2 years ago. Nothing changed, just different hardware :).

I say, best Amiga you can get is emulated Amiga (and UAE is FREE - crazy!), I had literally ZERO issues with installation of AmigaOS4.1 on my PC, but I like my old Amiga with all it issues AND you are partially "guilty". Now, after recap I will be using it next 20 years! ;)

This is probably the answer. If you see the OS4.1 splash screen it means the kernel has loaded and reset the machine properly.  It's probably searching for the CDROM drive and not properly finding it.   Dump the FastATA for now and setup as primary and slave on the A1200 IDE port and try again.
