Disturbing trend I've noticed in the last couple of months at my local ASDA. (I don't really like ASDA, but Morrisons is too far away to walk.)

Perhaps I'm in a better position to notice this, but milk and milk derivatives like lactose are finding their way into different foods more and more.

Kids' sweets for instance. It's quite possible to make these things without milk, but they put it in, supposedly to make them more "healthy." You can't buy soup without milk in it anymore, except for expensive Baxters stuff (who, to my pleasant surprise, make their stuff vegan where possible and label it as such). Others have started putting milk powder into crisps that didn't even contain lactose before.

Aside from the question of whether consuming as much processed milk as possible has any health benefits, it's a bugger for people on a dairy-free diet. Before you roll your eyes like, "whining vegan," think of people who have allergies to these products. Doesn't this piss anyone else off?

Food labelling convention sucks too. Remember the Big Brother apologist remark, "The only ones who need worry are those with something to hide"? Why won't they apply this to food labelling already?

It doesn't suit some people's agendas. And yet, the cameras are there for our own protection... yeah, right.

The business of "this may contain nuts" in foods that blatantly shouldn't, is almost as bad.  Considering that peanut allergies generally kill...

(And yes, I know the ins and outs of peanut allergies, please don't split hairs)

My twin sister has coeliac disease which means she can't have normal wheat or gluten foods.  Only fairly recently (past 3 or 4 years) have ASDA, Tesco and a few others started labelling their own products properly for this.

Now, some places have their own special shelf for gluten-free food, which is usually along side the organic stuff.

I'm sure they can find a place for the dairy-free stuff.

I'll look out for this bizarre trend in food stuffs next time I go shopping. Normally shop at Tesco or Sainbury's though.

Punkies right.

Personally I don't have any milk related allergies. But when I want milk, I drink it (often in copious amounts), or have it on cereal. I don't expect to find it in other foodstuffs.

Gelatine is bugbear of mine. I don't have a sweet tooth particularly but I used to like wine gums and so on. Since most jam and marmalade is made from pectin (thus vegetarian), why are most jellied sweets still made from gelatine?

cause gelatine is made from bones  :-?

bones are strong...therefore if people eat bones they'll be strong  :-D

IMHO just about the entire food industry is stuffed, even fruit and veg from the supermarket isn't what it used to be, its all about cutting costs and increasing profit, sadly thats what everything is about these days, who gives a sh!t about the consumer, we're only the ones who support these food manufacturers. As for "may contain traces of nut", mikeymike is spot on there, what a crock, it is either too hard for the producers of these products to clean their manufacturing equipment properly or it costs too much, my money is on the latter. This is kinda off topic, but has anyone else noticed that since Oreo moved its production lines over to China, that you get less cream filling and the overall flavour of the biscuits is kinda bland? Plus they cost more now, wtf is going on there... Once again, cutting costs at the expense of the consumer to increase profit.

Just about the whole world is profit driven, cut costs here, sack people there, it sucks, almost everyone is living for themselves and themselves only, its terrible, nobody gives a flying fu*k about the next person. In years to come, the world is gonna be one sad and sorry place. Sorry, but I kinda get carried away with things like this.

i thought i was the only one...

China is a source of cheap labour. It's still an LEDC/NIC and now it has a foothold for many TNC's like Oreo to come in and exploit people. Maybe it didn't work out/they wanted for profit/chinese workers can't be scammed as much, and require 2p instead of 1p  :-(

Urgh! Milk in coffee! Yuck, at least have the decency to use proper coffee cream!

Milk rules though, I'm quite the addict. I think I use about one litre of milk a day.

I only put it in instant, kills the rather crappy taste, I never put milk in real coffee, short black all the way.
