free RAM
« on: October 10, 2017, 07:06:42 AM »
I've tried reducing addbuffers and running add21k, but OS still uses about 300Kb, is there any way to free more RAM for whdload?
Better sorry than worry.

Have you played around with drive buffers? You could remove addbuffers for the floppy and lower the buffers for the harddrive partitions (as every harddrive partition has it's own buffer you could also limit the amount of partitions on the machine or at least disable unused partitions when playing games). AVAIL FLUSH might also give a bit of extra memory.

I almost have the full 2Mb (1,992Mb) chip available but that is because I have fastram which you lack, I assume? On an unexpanded machine I would probably not start WHDLoad from Workbench but boot without startup-sequence and go from there. That way you can at least still have a good looking Workbench (from which you can load some of the less demanding WHDLoad games).

I have 2Mb FAST RAM; using tinylauncher from startup.
how much free RAM can I expect with a single 500Mb pfs3 partition, 70 buffers and no startup-sequence?
Better sorry than worry.

Have you tried reducing the workbench resolution and colour depth?

I think add21k does that. I could use add36k but iirc there's some problem with it.
Better sorry than worry.

I dont think thats what it does. I believe it redirects some stuff to be stored in fast ram instead of chip.

lowering the workbench resolution and colour depth will definitely help. I assumed you already lowered it down to minimal spec.

also, are you using a launcher for whdload? try quitting it straight after starting a game. thats a trick I tend to use with iGame.

What exactly are you trying to do? As others have said, switch to a two color Workbench at 640x200 will save some ram. Also remove everything from user-startup, WBstartup drawer, etc.

i'm trying to run some games with preload or avoid 'context switch' in whdload.
startup-sequence is rather simple:

setpatch
addbuffers df0/dh0 -999
add21k
;clicknot
tinylauncher.exe

so, I'm already using all that stuff.
How much RAM is used in your Amiga without startup-sequence?
Better sorry than worry.

@orange
A clean 3.1 setup in WinUAE have 190K in use with just a single floppy and a single HDD with minimal buffers (3) to each when started with no startup-seq after running avail flush, run add21k and it's 170K.

So no accelerator,  no maprom issue.
Try removing the preload function and boot with no ss as mentioned above.
Do you use any move to fast patches?
