Linking sw

 I am not sure if this is the proper place for this post, if not I do sincerely apologize.
 I and a friend of mine are having issues with the AMIga-to-PC linking software that comes with Amiga Forever (name of the program eludes me at the momen). Basically, the issue is this: We can't get the program to link the two through any available port and can't figure out how to het the Amiga half of the program over to a floppy-only Amiga 1200.
  Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Amiga OS 3 comes with a program called "crossdos" that allows the Migy to read PC formatted floppies. Search for a "PC0" icon on one of the Amiga OS disks.. Let's see.. On the Extra disk perhaps ? It's been so long since I used a floppy only Miggy...

Anyway, "mount" PC0:, insert the PC formatted disk, and you should be able to read it..

Appreciate the thought but, i'll pay you money if you can prove to me a AMI 880k floppy drive can read a PC formatted 1.44mb floppy formatted TO 1.44mb, especially since the hardware Gurus at my local ami tell me it can't be done.

It cant. It can read a 720k formatted one though :-)

ISTR there is a hardware hack to allow the use of a normal HD floppy drive floating around aminet somewhere.

Your welcome, but like MadOne said, 720K disk work.. And it is only to get 1 program over from the PC to the Miggy, after that you use a serial link to transfer files.. ;-)

Yes, there is a hack for converting Escom machines DD floppies ( They were actually HD`s).
Also there is are Hardware devices like the Catweasel , that will physically use a pc floppy. And of course you could always use a Zip drive (with zip tools!).

All really mute as he only need 720k!  (as someone already said)

Ehm.. No..

You take a DD Floppy disk (720K) and format it on a PC, or take HD floppy disk (1.4Mb) and format it to 720Kb. Copy the Ami software to the 720Kb formatted disk, AFAIL it should fit as it was designed to be done this way.

Boot your 1200, mount PC0:, read the manuals if you need to, or ask for more help here, pop in the 720 Kb formatted disk and run the Amiga program..

I installed Amiga Explorer quite a while back now, and from memory it does not need a floppy at all.

Excuse any memory lapses here, but as I recall:

1  Connect the PC and the Amiga with a serial cable (from the PC com port to the Amiga serial port)

2  Fire up the A1200 and set it up to receive a message on the serial port, and send that to Ram:  The instructions on how to do this bit came with Amiga Explorer.

3  Run the install process on the PC.  As part of the install it sends some stuff down the serial line to the Amiga (which then puts it in Ram:)

4  Finish the install on the Amiga side using the stuff in Ram:

No disk required.

Of course, this is very much an overview (and could be a bit wrong in parts),  because my memory is hopeless, and I'm not at my machine.  The main point is that the install does not need a disk, and works if you follow the instructions supplied by Cloanto.

Don't forget that HD floppies have two square holes on either side of the disk. One is for write protect, the other is letting the drive know it is an HD floppy. To get the PC to format a 1.44MB floppy at 720KB, you must put an opaque piece of tape over the hole on the left hand side (with lable facing you). If not, it will always format at 1.44MB.
