Amiga 4000T Toaster/Flyer playback problem
« on: August 25, 2017, 06:05:30 PM »
I have an Amiga A4000T with a Toaster/Flyer combo. For some reason, I get an error when trying to playback a video project I created. The error is: "Cannot sequence video clip from a non-video drive. Try copying the clip to a video drive and add the clip to the project". The problem is intermittent, but happens 9 times out of 10 when trying to play the project. I actually found this http://forums.newtek.com/archive/index.php/t-6264.html but I did not have the drive setting it described. Funny thing is, I can play any video clip on both of the video drives individually and they play just fine. It's just trying to play a project when it fails. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just to add, I've swapped out the toaster/flyer boards for other ones, and the same issue occurs. If I run Flyer Calibrate from the HD Tools collection, it completes successfully.

I have a similar issue with mine, I can record and playback video, I can then chop up a large video into smaller sections...but when I try to create a project that uses video from the first drive, then changes to the other drive it fails.  Drives pass Flyer Format/Calibrate above the required transfer rates for the highest quality.  Unfortunately I don't have another Flyer to swap out....well I do but it doesn't work at all.

I've pulled all my drives currently and haven't had a chance to investigate it more.

Are you using A/v rated scsi drives?

drop down to 5 instead of 6. it's a better setting, 6 was a setting really only for later flyer boards

Out of curiousity what is your final output? Are you dumping it to a computer or to a deck?

Also, termination is very important. Is your scsi chain external or internal?

Yeah, they are A/V rated. Also, I ran all 3 drives through the Flyer's test program. Each drive took several hours, but they passed. This was a working rig several years ago when I put it together. I even posted a video I did on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS9dfT9xLjQ&t=9s

I dumped to a set top DVD burner. From there I ripped the DVD to get a file I could post to YouTube. They are internal.

Yeah that's weird. I tried reinstalling the Toaster software from CD-ROM and it keeps getting hung up on a read error, so I dunno. I'm working with a very old SCSI CD-ROM drive in the Amiga, so it could be finicky. I'm going to try to burn a new copy of the CD, but I have to go out and buy some CD-R's. The days of having a stack of blank CD-R's lying around are long since past!

I finally got the Toaster/Flyer software reinstalled. I ran full read/write tests on my Flyer 50GB drives (took three full days) followed by reformatting, and still have the same problem. The tests gave different results for each drive, which tells me my old scsi drives that I got used might need to go. When originally formatted several years ago, the tests yielded consistent results across all three drives. That being said, I have found that I am able to consistently play back a project if I do a soft reboot after booting up the first time (hitting the reset button on the A4000T). I don't know if this speaks to an issue with initialization of the Toaster/Flyer and the drives. In any event, doing a soft reboot works every time.
