Magic Menu Help Required.
« on: July 01, 2017, 08:19:36 AM »
A1200 - 4 Mb ram board, 4 Gb CF card to an old CRT-DVD TV now fizzing along nicely and a good picture quality.

The problem I've got is with my Magic Menu patch. Following a reinstall of my HD backup disks, all my desktop 3d icons are now only displaying 4 colors.

Has anyone got a fix for this?

I don't understand question. Seems that you workbench is using 4 colors?  But what is problem with magic menu?

From prefs and screenmode settings you can adjust number of colors.
ACube Sam 440ep Flex 800mhz, 1gb ram and 240gb hd and OS4.1FE
A1200 Micronic tower, OS3.9, Apollo 060 66mhz, xPert Merlin, Delfina Lite and Micronic Scandy, 500Gb hd, 66mb ram, DVD-burner and WLAN.
A1200 desktop, OS3.9, Blizzard 060 66mhz, 66mb ram, Ide Fix Express with 160Gb HD and WLAN
A500 OS2.1, GVP+HD8 with 4mb ram, 1mb chip ram and 4gb HD
Commodore CDTV KS3.1, 1mb chip, 4mb fast ram and IDE HD

Change your screenmode to use more than 4 colors?

Or use icons that are more colorful (like GlowIcons, MagicWB icons, etc.)

+1 for this question being confusing. Maybe post a screenshot for us? :)

You should do like it says, close all windows except drawers, you have other windows open, until you close them Workbench screen cant reopen.
A1200 030
A1200 stock
A600 Vampire v2

This is a normal message. Workbench is trying to change the screenmode. It can't do this 'cause you have stuff open. ;)

Or of course just save your chosen screenmode and then reboot the machine.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Thanks Mike. I've tried closing the windows down and nothing changes. I think some system files were corrupt when I restored my HDD files from some really old floppy disks.

I see you have a clock open in the upper right. Make sure to close that, too.

I can see from your screenshot that your Workbench is already running in more than 4 colors mode. Once you've closed everything (including the clock, like it's asking you to do) that may address whatever problem you think you're having.

Moving forward, if you're just looking for more attractive icons you might try something like this:

http://aminet.net/package/pix/mwb/StandardMagicWB16

- A huge collection of MagicWB-style icons (good for low-spec systems).  Alternatively you may want to look into icon sets like NewIcons, GlowIcons, etc., if your system is a bit faster and you'd like a more modern appearance.

Also definitely recommend the Peter K. icon library:

http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/IconLib_46.4

And FullPalette Prefs:

http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/FullPalette22

If you're looking for a good guide to improve the appearance of your Workbench, try this:

http://www.mfilos.com/2012/01/guide-making-workbench-prettier-using.html

Obviously before doing any of this however, you should fix whatever issues you think might've been brought over from a bad install of Workbench.  IMHO "nuke it from orbit" - a fresh reinstall of the OS - is a lot easier than trying to pick apart bugs.  If you've lost your original Workbench disks you can still buy them here:

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1211

Or 3.9, here:

Have fun! :D

Hi

Probably the Virus Checker and or clock causing the intuition problem, more likely the need to pump up to the 256 colours for PAL High Res

Your System icon is not a MagicWB . Can't see the RAM icon. When you close that window do you see all the other MagicWB icons. The Prefs icons are the standard Workbench icons.

If you run a text editor and open user-startup do you have an entry like this...

run nil>:  C:MagicWB-Demon and then a whole load of numbers ....

and in your C drawer do you have MagicWB-Demon

In Prefs there should be a MagicWB Prefs with loads of images.

Also on mine my screen mode is set to PAL: High Res Colors 256.

It's probably more of a tweak that you need to do. Also was the system running with a lot more RAM before on a different monitor. I am assuming you had this working before. Its just missing something that is all. Get SnoopDOS and run it in the background and fire up the system and open windows and such and see what it fails to do. Also check your icons to see who designed them. Use DOpus.

I have MagicWB running currently on one Amiga 1200 so any questions just feel free to ask. I'll check my config to see what you may be missing.

PS I just checked that Window again and those are not MagicWB-Demon icons so sorry you may be using something else. My bad.

Hi Scuzz,

Appreciate the advice - I'll see what I can do.

I'm just getting back into my A1200 - been playing around with Linux Mint 18.2 ATM.

I sensed I may be a cross purposes as I was maybe getting confused with MagicWB and not Magic Menu sorry. Just that I looked at the icons and they look like the ones I run with MagicWB.

That's gonna be slow. And use a lot of chip memory. IMHO if you're using MagicWB icons you should be able to get a nice looking Workbench with as few as 8 colors. If you're using GlowIcons or NewIcons (or something similar) you'll probably want to use a (minimum) 32 color screenmode to get a nice look. IMHO, YMMV. ;)
