Kalamatee Needs Support
« on: June 08, 2017, 09:59:58 PM »
Copy pasting Olafs post on Apollo Forum, since it deserves its own thread;

http://www.apollo-core.com/knowledge.php?b=1¬e=6366

Unfortunately one of the most active Aros developer has to quit because of financial problems.
more details here:
http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=10523&forum=4&post_id=104849#forumpost104849

there is a link to become donor to him, perhaps some want to support him.

Last comment on that thread ftw:  "It baffles me how Anyone with computer skills especially coding, could not be in demand and prosperous.
Of course personal problems and health would negate that I suppose."

@Oldsmobile_Mike

At the end of the day, we have to decide if the activity level of Kala is enough to warrant people supporting him.
Ive not really paid attention to AROS until Apollo Team started pushing for it, but based on what ive read from the AROS community, Kala seems to be a very active developer.

It's simple the market is flooded.

However personally I wouldn't consider any money given to kalamatee a handout.    If you put a $ amount on the amount of work he's put into AROS he's literally given the community $100,000's worth of his time.

On a final note if people want to get something in return for donating to him.  I will consider it a paid subscription for future updates of FinalWriter  to anyone who donates $5 a month to him.

Nick is one of the most important coders in the Aros community, he is working on SMP, 3D system and a lot more. If we lose Nick then all Amiga flavours suffer because Aros is a great source of code and inspiration for all platforms including the fact that the Vampire is making Aros 68k very relevant with Aros x86 the next step up to next generation with mad performance levels due to SMP and Nouveau 3d support for Kepler and Maxwell cards coming.

Please consider contributing to his Patreon page what you can afford, I have just increased mine as I believe passionately in the work he is doing. He has been working hard for a long time on Aros and doing this will return the favour by helping him now.

https://www.patreon.com/Kalamatee/posts

If we can get him up to $600 per month it will help him though this initial problems, if 50 people do $10 per month, this will go to helping when he needs it most and enable him to continue the great work he is doing.

We are all a community please pull together and help one of the best of us. Please do this as soon as possible if you are able.

Many thanks

you simply should gather what has been done so far, specify the features honestly, set up an appropriate price and release it as is. otherwise it may never get done. you can still charge for future essential updates.

I guess I just dont get it.   I have bills to pay.  With that in mind, I wouldnt touch/depend on an obscure/relatively unused operating system to pay my bills.   One would think that he would have a real job and work on AROS on the side.

He is obviously unemployed for some time and struggles to pay the bills. I think too that priority should be to become employed again, if not where he lives then somewhere else. There were even offers from amiga users that they might employ him. If that means less time for Amiga then certainly everyone would accept it. The only real solution to the problem in my view. But except one post we have not heard from him again. I donated 50 USD yesterday but that is only a option to solve problems on the short run, the only real solution is him working on a paid job again.

@OlafS3

I agree.  He's obviously very talented.   I'm sure someone would hire him as a programmer.

i dont want to speak for anybody, especially as im not really informed. but think of what might happen if the community so to say "hired" someone like that for their benefit, a work he obviously enjoys. this obviously addresses aros community in first place, but who knows. wile i doubt it a little, but what if enough funds might be gathered this way to guarantee stable income and steady development, rather than looking for some dumb job?

Competing articles to the contrary, there is no shortage of work out there.  I can't even walk down the street around my office and not trip over help wanted signs.

3.5 million cyber security positions expected to be open by 2021

"A new report out from Cybersecurity Ventures estimates there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by 2021, up from 1 million openings last year," CSO reports. "In 2017, the U.S. employs nearly 780,000 people in cybersecurity positions, with approximately 350,000 current cybersecurity openings." That number of jobs contrasts with the 209,000 positions available in 2015, which in turn were up 74 percent from the number of positions available in 2010.

The explosion in security positions is leading many to predict that there will be at least a half million unfilled security positions open by 2021. But it goes further than security-focused positions. "Every IT position is also a cybersecurity position now," the authors of the Cybersecurity Jobs Report for 2017 say. "Every IT worker, every technology worker, needs to be involved with protecting and defending apps, data, devices, infrastructure, and people."

The huge increase in positions is, in part, due to the steady drum beat of reported cyber attacks that are costing businesses trillions each year. As of 2015, businesses lost a reported $3 trillion in downtime and damages to cyber attacks. That amount is expected to increase by an additional $3 trillion by 2021.
