Fast Parallell/Serial port!
« on: March 05, 2004, 01:23:54 PM »
Hello!

I wonder which electronic device I'm going to buy to get a fast serial and a fast parallell port to my A1200. I have the Fast ATA chips on my mobo, so I don't know if there is an upgrade that fits the small hole down to the clockport.

I want some advice.

I bought a VarIO from individual computers and it is a great product. It contains a fast serial and a fast parallele port plus it is zorro or clockport. I had mine first as clockport than plugged it in one slot of my zorro4 board.
Higher transfer rate when using a modem connected to the internet because of the FIFO cache and faster printing plus you can plug a parallele zip drive from the pc world.
What do you want more for 100 euros (AFAIR).

Hello!

It seems a little bit expensive, 100 Euro for one parallell port and one Serial port. Does this fit when you have the mediator card over the clockport?

Where can I order one? I visited Individual computers homepage, but I could not find anywhere to order on their homepage.

Is there any other alternatives?

@jonssonj:

You can buy the HyperCOM 3+ which has two fast serial and one fast parallel port from GGS-Data in sweden for 550 SEK.

The HyperCOM 3+ is connected with a cable to the clock port so it should not suffer from any physical conflicts with other expansions. See this link for more information.

Wouldn't the best allround idea be to get a Clockport USB card, then get a Serial and Parallel adaptor if and when you need them.

Ther is not point adding yet more legacy to the system :-)

I need the fast parallell port for my HP laserprinter. I have the mediator in my A1200 so I do not need a USB for the clockport. I'm going to get the Spider II USB card for mediator.

If you are getting a Spider anyway, then get a USB->Parallel addaptor don't waste money on old I/O boards :-)

Hello!

Is there such a converter? I did not know that. Can I trust that this USB->Parallell converter really works 100%?

It depends on who made the converter, some stick to the USB specs, others are "close enough".. and some only have closed source Windows & Mac drivers :pissed:
At least with a Vario you know it`ll work..

Have a look on the E3B USB page, it has a list of stuff that`s known to work or not work. (I know the page is Highway/Algor/Subway specific, but it uses the same USB stack as the Spider)

BTW, why use a USB->Parallel converter for a printer?? Why not get a new USB one?
On schedule, and suing

Hello!

I bought a very expensive laser printer for many years ago. Its price was about 1200 EURO back then and the printer have post script level 2 and it can print at a dpi of 600x600 and it can print about 6 pages/minutes and the printer also have IR communication and some upgrading abilities in form of more memory and so on.

Today you can get a printer like this for much less money, but I'm very happy with my printer and I have never regret that I bought that printer. It have never failed me and I have only switched Toner in it one time so far. Actually I bought this printer specifically to my A1200...  :-)  I have many fond memories of my printer...  :-)

Hello!

By the way, I have ordered the hypercom 3+ from GGS data in Sweden. I hope it will arrive this week.
