A1K Red A500+ black screen
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:32:46 AM »
I bought one of those Red a500+ from A1K.  Acill professionally assembled it for me, and tested it, even send me a video of it working, and then shipped it back to me.  It arrived today, and I attempted to power it on.  Nothing...just a black screen.

I turned it off, and pressed on all the chips to make sure they were all seated, and only the CPU was loose.  Turned it back on, still a black screen.

I then powered off, and attached my ACA500+ to the board.  The LEDs come on for a second or two, then go blank, so, I am sure the board is receiving power.

I don't have a keyboard for this (my other A500 is in storage now, but, can be retrieved) so I cannot say what the keyboard LEDs are doing.  I also don't have an internal floppy to tell you whether it starts up.  I do have an external floppy, but, it does not spin up when plugged into the floppy port.

Any ideas what may be wrong?  I'd ask Acill, but, he is away at sea for the next week or so and there is no way to contact him.

Was Acill using his own power supply when he was testing-building it for you? I think I remember seeing an adapted PC supply on his bench in the photos he posted. Perhaps your power supply is having issues. I would suggest taking some voltage measurements when the board is switched on. Make sure you have a solid +5 and +12 volts etc to the motherboard.

Yes, I believe so.  I have 3-4 other power supplies I can try.  I have it currently attached to a Bigfoot systems 250W Amiga power supply.

If memory serves, you need some sort floppy signal to boot the amiga.  or something like the following.

I have never been able to boot  A500s including my A500+ without some type of floppy signal.  maybe someone else has?  Also a keyboard is handy to see if the power light is flashing and the number of times and if you can soft-reboot.

I will try a floppy.  In the video and photos of the build, I did note that he did not have a keyboard attached in one of the pics, but, he did have a Gotek drive as DF0.  It was powered by a standard A500 power supply, not an ATX with converter.

No.  I am going to send it back to Paul when he gets back in town.  The guys over on A1K seem to think the oscillator crystal MAY have gotten damaged during shipment to give these symptoms.  Since I don't have an oscilloscope to check such things, I've got to send it back to the pro.
