Amiga Goldengate 486SLC slows downwhen amiga is being used
« on: April 06, 2017, 03:06:24 PM »
Greetings

I have a unusual Problem. My revision 6.2 A2000 with 2MB chip and a A2620 Acellerator got a 468SLC@25MHZ bridgeboard installed. All fine and it works perfectly aslong - The amiga is not being used! Every action i do with the Amiga (simplest one is moving the mouse) will Slow down the Bridgeboard till it halts. This is such a unusal problem wich i could not solve yet and i hope you guys an help me there. I tested it also on a 4.2 A2000 with plain 68000 and 68010 chip with os 2.x and os3.1... Always the same problem.

I uploaded a Video to show a example of what happens.
https://youtu.be/G-BBakTbo7k

I start the Bridgeboard with the Goldmine1 Disk at the moment that i have found on amigaresource.

Anyone got a clue what this might be?

Do you have the CPU adapter plugged into your motherboard? (BBoAH: The adaptor consists of a 68000 socket with a small capacitor (about 10nF) soldered between pins 12 and 14.)

I'd turn of any sharing of memory between the systems and see if that improve system performance.

Yep, also with aAccellerator board its not needed.
There also never where shared memory enabled.

Check to see if the CPU or pal/gal chips are getting hot.  they may need replaced

Everything is hand warm on the Brideboard and A2000.
Tested it with 2 different A2000 boards and 3 different CPU's ... only board left to test is my Third A2000 - German modell

Ok i also tested it now ith my A2000 - German edition . Same scenario.
Oh and important, It is not a 10 Nf but a 1Nf capacitor. Some guys back then decoded the original writing on it.

I know zilch about it, but is there other software on the Amiga side to launch it besides the disk that you found online? Is that supposedly the correct software?

Nope using the goldmine 1 Disk to start it directly from there.

Hard to tell from your video, but is the mouse input being fed into the Amiga side, or is the bridgeboard trying to do some conversation on it and feed it to the PC side? In other words, if you hook a second monitor up to it, one on the PC side and one on the Amiga side, and you move the mouse around, does the pointer move on the Amiga screen or the PC screen?

Edit: have you tried the software from here? http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/goldengate

I use the software from that site.

the Pc site also stalls not only moving the mouse sadly but also when the amiga does anything like for example accessing the harddrive or calculting something. For a mouse being used via the pc side i would need to install a mouse driver.

I know the software hooks into the amiga site and captures mouse inputs and ofcourse amiga inputs so i can use the amiga keyboard on the pc site but that how its always should be anyhow and normally should not cause any problems. (otherweise the outrage would have been huge in the community for 22 years now :)

I couple more ideas for you.

I notice that you did not have any other zorro II cards.  Is it possible that you have a bad buster?  see if other Zorro II card like scsi card get slow.   (ie look at transfer rate perhaps).  Additionally look for blown capacitors, you may need to recap the motherboard.  Lastly your power supply maybe going.  check your voltages and see if they are low.

I doubt the problem is in the motherboard or psu as he tried it in two more A2000s with the same results.

I would check with different versions of the software for the goldengate and also with new clean install of Workbench.

It may also be worth trying it on an Amiga 3000 or 4000, as it could have issues with the 2000 (unlikely but you never know). Perhaps the emulation needs a vga card to operate at full speed? Hopefully an experienced owner of this card will show up (try also asking at Amibay,.many people have them there)

Failing that I would look for some hardware bottleneck between the Amiga and the card. Try different slots, clean the card contacts with contact cleaner, and look for obvious hardware problems on the card (blown capacitors, does it take simms? Can you perhaps replace the memory? )
