Any recent updates for smb-handler or smbfs?
« on: March 02, 2017, 09:44:23 PM »
As the era of Windows XP and compatible versions of Samba in NASes dies out, these very useful utilities are showing their age.

In my case I have an EMC NAS with a special share for Amiga software.  If I leave the share open to all users with no authentication necessary, smb-handler works just fine.  However, lock the share down to require authentication and smb-handler cannot connect.

smbfs will connect and authenticate just fine, however it is single-threaded and using it from DOpus or Workbench (the latter explicitly not recommended) is as slow as... well, think of something REALLY SLOW that makes you want to stab someone in the neck just to keep from falling asleep.

As an aside, FTPmount works, but it is slow, as well, and useless for Internet-facing sites which require TLS.

Currently running: smb-handler 0.19, smbfs 1.74.

Didn't find this last night, but I just found a mention at EAB about smbfs v1.102.  Doesn't mention if it addresses the threading issue, but definitely will be worth a try.

I'm interested in this too. I'm a new user to SMBFS. I use it to access my NAS. I was previously using ch_nfsmount to access it through Genesis but I changed my stack to Roadshow (which is much, much faster) and disabled my old NFS shares.

Oh, yeah, just tried out smbfs v1.102 and it flies!  Now, I may be old fashioned or stuck in old ways but I rather like a mount list.  So while I would prefer an up-to-date smb-handler, smbfs works very well, and with the proper arguments it can act like a mount-ed device, including an assigned device name (like NAS:) and a volume name so it appears on the Workbench.

I am using Miami DX and a USB 10/100 Ethernet adapter.  I can imagine it would run a bit better under Roadshow as it's taking a ridiculously long time to copy a 600MB ISO.  Oh, actually it's just stalled :(  It could be a stack problem as it's only getting 4k (although my default used to be 32k... what happened with that?)  I'll try setting the priority to a -5, as well, on par with other "services."

EDIT: Actually, I don't think the problem is smbfs.  MiamiDX or Poseidon seems to be dying as soon as I start running a lot of traffic through it.  The fix is to power-cycle the USB Ethernet then take Miami off-line and back on-line.  A little contemplation and I think I may have some mismatches in Poseidon as I have all of the original 4.whatever it was classes and parts in my Deneb flash-ROM, but recently upgraded to Poseidon 4.5.  I did see a marked increase in performance with this version of smbfs so I'm ready to call that for what it is and troubleshoot my troubled system otherwise.

Maybe I don't understand your question, but you can mount smbfs shares the "Amiga way" with SMBmounter, can't you http://aminet.net/package/comm/net/SMBMounter? At least that's what I do.

I do however start to loose track of all the smbfs versions (also see here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=86198&highlight=smbfs).
- There's supposed a new one that is very buggy, only allows you to read from the share, not write to it (1.74).
- The old version you're talking about, slow, single threaded
- The 1.102 version you now mention (some report writing errors here too)
- 1.111 no idea whether this works

I have a config working but I am not sure about the writing to the NAS share. My NAS needs an update (Synology DSM 6.1) and SMB is updated to 4.4 then. So I guess I'll have to verify everything soon anyway, maybe the newer SMB version on the NAS breaks everything again :(

I'm with all of you with SMBFS.

First issue that I had was SMBMounter sometimes trashes graphics and slows down the system.  So stopped using it.

Have tried 1.74, 1.85, and 1.102, and they all have issues with my NAS.  Generally 1,85 works the best with general usage of copying back and forth from it.  It does occasionally lockup the system.

I have played with 1.102 and increased the cache and use minstack, and it seems to work better with Amiback writing a backup file to the nas, but not for general usage.

The only other issue that is a pain, nothing to do with smbfs, is the file size limitations of the OS.  To bad there isn't a fix for this.

I use roadshow on a xsurf 100 with a PPC and Mediator 3000D.  My NAS is a QNAP.

A simple icon in DOSDrivers is my preferred method

I found the source for 1.111 on github, but I don't suppose anyone has the binary?
