Amiga diskmags - any still produced?
« on: February 16, 2017, 05:32:43 PM »
One of my favourite Amiga activities of old was reading diskmags. I always enjoyed The Word (NFA), Grapevine and the like.

Are there any Amiga diskmags still being produced? I know we have blogs on the internet which serve a similar function, but there was something magical about that mix of music, art and the random mixture of articles.

Diskmags were done by sceners, for free.
I wouldn't put Amiga Future in the same category...

LOL.  It's a magazine.  It comes with a disk.  Sorry if my definition is a little more literal than some folks.  :laughing:

Oh man...there's a big difference between a traditional magazine and a diskmag.

Guess that answers my question.

Hi Dandelion,

I'm in a demo group (Void) and we released a diskmag/chart in December. Please have a look:

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=68672

The focus is on the charts, but there are a few articles as well. There will be more content in the coming issues. You can get the mag for Amiga and AmigaOS 4. :)

Spaceballs are releasing their Irregular Review mag also.. last issue was in October 2016:

Hope this was of help. :)

How can I unarchive this? I downloaded it under Linux, then installed something called jlha, but this is what happened...

jlha vs7ßami.lha
PERMSSN    UID  GID      SIZE  RATIO     STAMP           NAME
---------- ----------- ------- ------ ------------ --------------
LHa: Warning: Checksum error (LHarc file?)
LHa: Fatal error: Unkonwn header (lha file?)

How big is this file? Can't you just post it as an ADF file or two?

WinRAR on a PC can open Amiga .lha archives just by clicking on them.  I'm sure there must be something similar for Linux.

A quick google search shows this one: http://www.e7z.org/open-lzh-lha.htm

this one: http://freecode.com/projects/lhaforunix

and this one: https://fileinfo.com/software/igor_pavlov/7-zip

Because ADF is a terrible, horrible file format that needs to go DIAF.

"this" being Versus #7? There's a free reimplementation of LhA for Linux, it's called lhasa. Just check if your distribution has a package with that name (Debian does). It extracts vs7-ami.lha just fine.

There's also a (not completely free) port of LhA, some distributions are still carrying that one. I never heard of 'jlha', i.e. the one you are using.

This archive contains just a single executable, not a disk image btw. - as is to be expected with lha archives containing Amiga stuff.

Thank god you're en expert on everything, not just Google and diskmags.

Thank god you're not an expert at snark or trolling.  :roflmao:

But since you're back, did you ever have a response to this guy's thread?

If you are talking about the Commodore Free, yes, that's a web-based magazine.  If you are talking about Reset magazine, that is web-based with paper issues distributed, too.  Reset also comes with an extra-cost, optional 5 1/4 inch floppy disk.

I thought the established definition was a magazine *on* a disk, not with a disk. STAMpede/rAMpage for example.
