WHDLoad Free refuses to run on my WB install
« on: February 07, 2017, 10:26:36 AM »
At the moment I am using the fully-featured WB install that came with Amiga Forever 2012, which has the Unregistered version of WHDLoad on it already. However, I have not been able to install the Free version of WHDLoad on top of it and have it run. I click on a random game file and for a split second WB says "Attempting to load WHDLoad..." but nothing more. It's because of this I had to set up a secondary WB install just to run WHDLoad, but I would prefer to use the main WB install.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? What old WHDLoad files should I delete before I should attempt to install it again?

WHDLoad_usr_small.lha only consists of eight files:

C: DIC
C:Patcher
C:RawDIC
C:WHDLoad
C:WHDLoadCD32
S:WHDLoad.prefs
S:WHDLoad-Cleanup
S:WHDLoad-Startup

+ some docs and history texts.

Delete all those in your SYS: and replace with the ones from the .lha archive, should resolve any problems with "the wrong version of WHDLoad".  Arguably you don't even need most of those - just replacing the main C:WHDLoad executable is usually enough to update to the latest version (if you already have a previous version installed).

That being said, I suspect your problem is actually  with this so-called "full-featured" WB install of Amiga Forever 2012, or with the setup of the games you've installed.  Try checking the icon tooltypes of one of your games.  Does it point to C:WHDLoad?  Post a screenshot.  Also, are the .slave files and any other files necessary for the game to run located in the correct directory?  Did the games ever run?  You might want to try downloading from a different source, etc.  Good luck!  :)

Thanks, Mike, but I've already discussed this problem at length with the good folks over at the English Amiga Board, and as a result I'm going to try one of the Classic Workbench packs, namely the Lite version. I've already experimented and the results are looking promising!

EDIT: We discussed everything we could to get the Free version of WHDLoad working on that AF install, but it just would not comply - clicking on a game's icon or even using the Shell would result in WHDLoad seeming to work, but freezing and nothing happening. In the end, I put it down to a problem in the AF install and just decided to do away with it, once and for all, especially considering how easy-to-install the Classic WB packs are.

AF Workbench on a real Amiga? I wonder whether it has custom parts then that impede real Amiga use? Afterall it is an emulation. The only Workbench pack I do like is AmigaSYS.

Good call.  If you haven't already guessed, I'm not a super-big fan of a lot of these "Workbench enhancer" packs.  Just seen too many people having random problems like this because of the way they change things around.  Better to start with a regular Workbench install and then customize it to suit your tastes, IMHO.  ;)
