RCS Fusion 40 and GVP HC+8 Series II
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:26:01 PM »
Has anyone used this particular combo in an A2000?

I'm looking at one over on ebay and want to make sure all the parts are compatible before throwing down a bid.

My GVP controller has a full 8MB RAM.

Not sure what version the ROM's are on the card, but I do plan on running WB 3.1 and eventually 3.9.

Thanks.

I've never tried to run those two particular cards, however a long time ago I tried to run a GVP HC+8 Series II simultaneously with a GVP GeForce 040 accelerator.

If I recall correctly I couldn't get it to boot from a drive connected to the accelerator. Removing the GVP ROM (both devices had a GVP ROM version 4.15 on them) from the accelerator allowed it to boot from a drive connected to the HC, but not the other way around. I tried changing jumpers around (including the autoboot jumpers) without success.

Eventually I gave up and sold the HC on. I thought it was some fundamental incompatiblity between the two GVP cards, but in hindsight I'm thinking it may just have been a defect in that particular HC. Good luck, in any case, with your boards! :)

I am pretty sure OK if GVP has fairly mature ROM, 3.15 or later. You want to be careful the code in the BIOS ROM is 040 friendly.

Also be aware it's a hot card to run. Pay attention to cooling with it or you'll regret it.

Don't get overly concerned, it is normal with 040s, and A2000 maybe roomiest machine to deal with it.

Maybe rig a fan on the 040 chip?  I think I have a couple of old 486 fans that would just clip on.

That or I think I have a "fan" card that would fit in the ISA slots and draws power from them.  Card is nothing but 3-4 fans blowing like crazy to keep the inside of the machine cooler.
